About Vidant Bertie Hospital

Vidant Bertie Hospital is a six-bed critial access state-of-the-art facility located in Windsor, North Carolina that provides surgical, emergency and diagnostic services, specialty clinics and primary care clinics. Our primary care physician practice operates the Vidant Family Medicine - Windsor and we have a telemedicine link with the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. The Emergency Medicine Physicians see approximately 30 patients per day, as well a cover the 6 inpatient beds during nights and weekends. Our medical staff includes some of the finest primary care, internal medicine physicians and surgeons in the region.


  • Uses the nursing process to perform case management services to assigned case load: completes initial client/family assessments and problem lists; accurately identifies and prioritizes patient problems; performs home, resident telemedicine and phone follow-up as indicated; collaborates with client, physicians and other providers to develop a comprehensive plan of care; effectively communicates care plans and other client-related activities both verbally and in writing to appropriate personnel and agencies; utilizies clinical skills and assessments to work autonomously in outpatient, community settings, and to communicate with physicians and other providers regarding alterations in the plan of care; demonstrates the ability use teaching, learning and counseling skills. 
  • Acts as a client advocate for the development of community resources: maintains a directory of available services by geographical area and updates others about new services; consults others to identify potential community resources for resolving client health, psycosocial, or financial problems; functions as liaison to external agencies and relays information to others, which may impact care and/or services of clients; demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide service appropriate to the age of the patient; develops and initiates cost savings strategies to achieve decrease in patient resource utilization.
  • Collaborates effectively with departmental/program staff to achieve goals and objectives: attends department/program meetings regularly; maintains productivity and optimum client caseload as negotiated with department director; ensures collection of data for outcomes and other studies as requested; provides information for maintenance of case management client database; supports efforts to implement disease management model.
  • Provides leadership in areas of clinical expertise: demonstrates effective interpersonal communication skills; develops and implements programs or projects which facilitate the attainment of corporate goals; facilitates productive meetings with interdisciplinary team members from across the system; develops strategic long-range plans in area of specialization; participates in financial planning for specialty care.
  • Maintains and advances knowledge and skills in area of specialization: participates in professional organizations; advances clinical expertise through attendance at conferences, reading journals, etc.; maintains a professional network among colleagues.
  • Participates in Quality Improvement (QI) activities: changes practice behavior as a result of data; encourages clinical problem identification and resolution activities; role models use of QI principles and techniques; identifies, addresses, and reports quality issues identified through data sources.  

Minimum Requirements

  • Current RN licensure inteh State of NC or hold a class P Temporary License as a Registered Nurse in NC.
  • Evidence of at least four years of clinical competence in providing direct nursing services to both acutely and chronically ill patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Evidence of a high level of skill in assessment, identification of problems, care planning, identification and development of community resources, and patient/family teaching.
  • Demonstration of strong communication/interpersonal skills, effective decision-making and problem-solving skills, flexibility and assertiveness, ability to use good judgment, and ability to work effectively with others.
  • Evidence of participation in career development for professional growth through use of literature, research and educational activities.

Preferred Requirements

  • BSN/Master's Degree in nursing from an accredited college or university.
  • Evidence of progressive leadership experience either as a charge nurse or primary nurse essential.
  • Evidence of at least one year of previous experience as a nurse case manager or discharge planner with clients in the clinical specialty area desirable.

  • Full-time exempt (salaried) position
  • Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
