Vidant Medical Center is a fully accredited, 900+ bed regional referral facility encompassing a Level-1 Trauma Center and extensive inpatient and outpatient services including intensive and intermediate care, pediatrics, bariatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, pain management and psychiatry.

The Mental Health Technician is a member of the Behavioral Health patient care team who, under the direction and supervision of a licensed nurse, performs specific responsibilities within the framework of the philosophy and objectives of nursing services and hospital policies.


  • Physically and verbally intervenes in dangerous situation involving patient safety and calls for response team or other help as needed to assure patient safety when a patient demonstrates out of control behavior such as throwing furniture, or physically hurting himself or others, or is a threat to himself or others in the surrounding environment.

  • Assesses and documents and determines patient's intent to harm himself or others and notifies nurse in charge immediately.  Provides a safe environment by checking for and removing harmful objects in patient's belongings such as cords, razors or medications or any sharp objects, glass objects or any object that could be harmful. Immediately removes and removes medications or any contraband and notifies charge nurse as soon as possible.

  • Assists patient in normal daily activities of living as needed.  Assists patient to bed with side rail up and assesses patient's reality and orientation.  Assists patients with bathing, elimination, ambulating, positioning, turning and transferring under the supervision of RN

  • Takes rounding board and documents patient's location observes precautions such as suicide, close, routine precautions. Supervises confused or wandering patients.

  • Transports patient by appropriate means after consulting with registered, from ECT accompanied by a RN, taking vital signs when arriving back to the unit, verbally notifies nurse in charge before leaving patient unattended.  Accompanies patient to procedures if requested by RN for safety reasons concerning the patient,

  • Presents patient in patient care conferences and documents progress intervention on care plan for team conferences.

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate College Degree in Human Services or closely related degree or minimum of 1 year work experience as a Nursing Assistant I in a closely related care environment
  • Active NC Nursing Assistant I Certification
  • BLS requires

Preferred Requirements

  • Prior work experience in a Behavioral Health Setting
