Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital is a 114-bed, not-for-profit hospital located in Ahoskie, NC. The 15-bed ER serves approximately 21,000 patients per year from the local community and surrounding towns. This modern facility provides a wide range of health services to its 39,000 residents in the four-county area.

Ahoskie, NC is ideally located an hour from the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area and two hours from Raleigh, Richmond, Williamsburg, and the beautiful Outer Banks of NC. Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide service appropriate to the age of the patient/client.

  •  Prioritize the ordered laboratory tests by assessing which tests are more critical and collecting, and processing them accordingly based on the age and difficulty of being able to obtain a sample from the patient. 

  • Assess patient’s current medical status to evaluate changes that require immediate medical intervention. Knows whom to call and what information to give with critical values and Initiates proper Code Blue when indicated in the phlebotomy setting. 

  • Participates in life-support activities as required, responds to Trauma and other emergencies throughout the hospital when indicated. 

  • Understands and abide by departmental and hospital policies and procedures. Obtains laboratory order prior to entering orders, or specimen collection, ensures appropriate clinical information is present on order and that appropriate test is ordered in accordance to patients needs. 

  • Maintains a professional appearance by adhering to the departmental dress code and maintaining a stocked, clean work environment.

  • Demonstrates appropriate aseptic technique for specimen integrity, and safety for patient, self and others during specimen collection and processing. 

  • Charge for collection of serum on all hospital collected outpatients while maintaining minimum operating expense by proper selection of collection and testing materials. 

  • Uses universal precautions appropriately and performs proper handwashing between each patient.

  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information.

  • Uses department “scripts” to effectively communicate with other departments, patients, families, coworkers and students in person or over the phone.

  • Demonstrates safe operation of all equipment in compliance with department policy, safety, disinfection, infection control and quality control standards.

  • As directed by the supervisor may have additional responsibility as charge phlebotomistist and/or preceptor for students and/or new employees

    Demonstrates effective computer skills for electronic charting, billing and respiratory order processing.

  • Participates in Inservice Education, Patient Rounds/Conferences and obtains 24 education contact hours per biennium. 

Minimum Requirements

  • ASCP registry eligible (MT) with certification obtained within 12 months from hire date or registry eligibility  date. 

  • Current BLS, if not current at time of hire, must complete within first 6 months of employment and maintain.    
  • Active status with certifying agency recommended.
