The Chemistry laboratory at VMC performs chemical and immunochemical testing on both inpatients and outpatients. Specialized areas of testing include protein electrophoresis, hemoglobinopathy evaluation, and sweat chloride testing in addition to a variety of automated and manual chemistry tests

Responsibilities

  • Prepare patient specimens as required for laboratory testing (collect, label, transport and triage specimens).
  • Perform both automated and manual chemistry testing including blood gas, infectious disease, toxicology/TDM and sweat chloride analysis.
  • Monitor test results to assure test quality and validity.
  • Follow departmental Quality Control and Quality Assurance policies.
  • Insure accurate specimen identification throughout all phases of laboratory testing.
  • Perform and document instrument maintenance and troubleshooting according to policy.
  • Enter laboratory results into laboratory computer system.
  • Communicate results in a timely manner, especially those that may be life-threatening to the patient.
  • Retrieve data from laboratory computer system and report to appropriate health care personnel by phone, as requested.
  • Report problems to supervisory personnel, when appropriate.
  • Assist with inventory control (ordering and unpacking of reagents/supplies).
  • Assist with projects or oversight duties, as assigned.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Treat patients, families, visitors and staff with dignity and respect.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • B.S. in Medical Technology or Clinical Lab Science from an accredited college or university.
  • ASCP registered or eligible to register for one of the following:  MT or C

Full-time  4:00am to 2:30pm Wednesday -Friday and every other weekend
