Vidant Chowan Hospital's partnership with Vidant Health gives our patients access to state-of-the-art services provided by an academic medical center. Our medical staff includes some of the finest primary care, pediatric, internal medicine physicians and surgeons in the region, and we have a telemedicine link with the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.


Position Summary

Technician works under the immediate supervision if the Laboratory Supervisor.?? Performs clinical laboratory tests (Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Serology, Urinalysis and other miscellaneous areas) by standard operating policies and procedures, understands method principles, performs quality control & calibrations, performs preventive maintenance, and analyzes results as to accuracy, acceptability and critical limits.?? Work according to rotation of schedule when necessary.


Maintains proper documentation as described in Quality Assurance Program including, entering quality control values in computer, equipment logs, and checklists
Performs test procedures on specimens as described in the Standard Operation Procedure Manuals.
Demonstrates the ability to accurately, efficiently, and safely perform venipuncture and capillary procedures.
Send specimens to reference laboratories for any testing not performed in- house.
Ensures that test equipment is functional and maintained according to maintenance schedules indicated by the manufacturer; in the event of equipment malfunctions, initiates trouble-shooting procedures and if necessary, assumes responsibility for calling service organization for repair of defective equipment.
Must be able to use laboratory computer system to order test, result tests, enter comments, and lookup patient results and test requirements.
Promptly, calls all critical values to the appropriate licensed health care provider.
Notifies supervisor of out-of control, discrepant or unexpected results.
Maintains a neat/clean organized work area and keeps working supplies stocked.
Perform calibration as scheduled, when asked and within set time frame.
Ensures that safety procedures outlined in Safety Manual are followed and that medical waste is properly disposed of.
Determines and provides appropriate care relative to patients?? age-specific needs in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
Supports and adheres to hospital and departmental policies.
Participates in CQI activities as directed.
Completes hospital yearly educational requirements.
Attends mandatory in-service programs and promotes personal development by attending appropriate workshops, seminars or other education programs.
Upon completion of workshops and seminars, responsible for presenting information obtained to staff members.
Performs proficiency testing accurately and timely.
Demonstrates ability to use independent judgment, responsibility and initiative in applying methods to produce optimal laboratory studies with minimal supervision.
Assist with reviewing procedures and collecting data for instrument analysis.
Assists with preparation for laboratory inspections, i.e. CAP and JCAHO.
Assists in orientating and training new employees to the laboratory.
Complete on-going competency assessments as assigned.
Complete 20 hours of laboratory continuing education.

Minimum Requirements

Must possess an associate degree in Clincal Laboratory Science and be registered as a Medical Laboratory Technician, or equivalent, by a nationally approved accrediting agency or be eligible to take such exam. :???? Must be registry eligible (ASCP or equivalent).?? Must take certification exam within 2 years of employment.
