About the Outer Banks Hospital

The Outer Banks Hospital, located in Nags Head, North Carolina, is a full service critical access hospital offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services. The hospital opened in March 2002 and is one of the newest hospitals in eastern North Carolina. The hospital's 21 private rooms are designed to meet the needs of our coastal community, whose year-round population of approximately 35,000 swells to about 250,000 in the summer season. The labor and delivery area consists of two labor/delivery/recovery/postpartum rooms, a five-bed nursery, a dedicated caesarean-section operating room and a triage room.


  • Is knowledgeable in the operation of and inspects, troubleshoots and maintains the facilities physical plant systems. These actions result in independent decisions based on test results and overall system requirements utilizing sound engineering judgment.
  • Maintains fire on boilers and controls the generation of steam for heating, hot water, cooking and sterilizing surgical equipment. Shifts to alternate fuel sources for boiler operations from gas to oil and from oil to gas during curtailment. Ensures that fuel quantities are sufficient and lined up for transfer to diesel generators and boilers under emergency conditions that may arise at any time.
  • Keeps abreast of fuel quantities, purity and line-up for emergency diesels, boilers and the incinerators. Is prepared to shift to “alternate” fuel for boiler operations should the normal gas supply be curtailed.
  • Able to proficiently operate the Tridium Niagara R2 Web Base computer system and use the system to diagnose problems and to increase the efficiency of the physical plant operations. Also manipulates valves and other controls to ensure the optimum performance of boilers, HVAC, and other physical plant systems. Accomplishes these actions to maintain the operating plant in peak condition. Able to operate the computerized Total Maintenance System (TMS) as trained.
  • Identifies problems, substandard performance and controls casualties to all operating equipment. Is able to make any and all adjustments required and shift to backup machinery when appropriate.
  • Is able to complete all duties and assignments of the maintenance Mechanic I job description. Unclogs plumbing backups using blueprints for guidance. Operates power snakes and plungers and removes various piping components as required. Performs maintenance on HVAC equipment and air handlers as assigned.
  • Is able to mix appropriate amounts of chemicals for treatment of boiler water based on earlier tests. Conducts mechanical boiler water treatments to maintain the desired limits.
  • Cleans boiler internals including tubes, firebox, nozzles, stacks and other designated components. Is able to disassemble for the yearly insurance inspection.
  • Performs all work in accordance with (IAW) all Preventive Maintenance work orders as assigned. Keep records on equipment assigned showing type, model number, installation date, repair history, and/or service work performed on same equipment.
  • Works with outside contractors and can review and interpret blueprints, technical manuals and drawings to permit time, material, and labor estimates; and to assist in scheduling equipment downtime and installation assessments.
  • Maintains inventory and stock of supplies used for facility and equipment repairs. Maintains tools and parts in good operating condition and keeps assigned areas clean.
  • Responds to codes as required and assist Security as necessary. Assists in the testing of various alarm systems, i.e., Fire Alarm System, etc. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school graduate or the equivalent required. Must have knowledge of mechanical and general building maintenance skills required.
  • Boiler operations experience or physical plant background of at least four years. Trade school graduate may be acceptable in lieu of experience. Demonstrate ability to read and interpret blueprints and design sketches.

Preferred Requirements

  • Hospital experience preferred.
  • Trade license preferred.

Other Information

  • This is a full-time position with benefits.
  • Must be willing to work evenings and weekends with call rotation.
