The Outer Banks Hospital, located in Nags Head, North Carolina, is a full service critical access hospital offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services. The hospital opened in March 2002 and is one of the newest hospitals in eastern North Carolina. The hospital's 21 private rooms are designed to meet the needs of our coastal community, whose year-round population of approximately 35,000 swells to about 250,000 in the summer season. The labor and delivery area consists of two labor/delivery/recovery/postpartum rooms, a five-bed nursery, a dedicated caesarean-section operating room and a triage room.

Position Summary

  • An MRI Technologist I is qualified by professional credentialing; academic and clinical experience to provide diagnostic patient care services using an approved magnetic imaging scanner. The scope of practice of the MRI Technologist I includes those procedures acts and processes permitted by law, for which the individual has received education and clinical experience, has demonstrated competency, and has completed the appropriate AART (R) (MR) certifications which are the standard of practice in magnetic imaging. He/She modifies and delivers care that is specific to the age, growth and level of development of patients including adolescent, adult and geriatric.


  • Demonstrates responsibility for Patient Safety as measured by proper patient positioning and instruction, safe prep and administration of contrast agents, protection of patient/staff in high magnetic field area,  accuracy of patient identification, follow up on Safety Intelligence (SI) events, SBAR handoff technique.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform Accurate and Reliable Patient Care utilizing Radiology equipment and proper technique according to established departmental procedures and protocols as measured by image quality, documented errors, completion of patient exams,  competency documentation, chart audit, feedback on patient care issues requiring investigation at department level.
  • Demonstrates participation in maintaining Technical Operations as measured by proper set up / use of equipment, proper selection of surface coils and scan parameters, documented daily and periodic equipment QC/maintenance, ongoing quality measures, active review/update of departmental policies and procedures, supply inventory, film/CD preparation, involvement in departmental projects/initiatives.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and application of Computer Skills as measured by use of Epic EHR and Radiology IT functions/competencies(Radiant, iSite, Primordial, iSuite), Epic and PACS navigation/competencies, accuracy to EHR charge capture, accuracy and consistency of patient Electronic Medical Record charting documentation review.
  • Maintains Accurate Records and Documentation as measured by equipment QA/troubleshooting and maintenance documentation, Radiant records, patient EHR charting documentation review.
  • Demonstrates Critical Thinking Skills and ability to actively troubleshoot and problem solve patient care scenarios as measured by interactions with other OBH department staff/MD’s, Dare EMS, vendor hotline support.
  • Demonstrates Engagement and Professionalism in the Education/Training of students, new/current employees and patients as measured by student/instructor interaction, completeness of competency documentation, performance of student/new employee, patient EHR charting documentation review.
  • Demonstrates commitment to Professional Competency as measured by minimum 15 CEU/yr, annual mandatory education,  nnual review of P&P, participation in CEU activities, timely review of P&P updates, pursuance of certifications.
  • Demonstrates Engagement in Departmental and Organizational Operations as measured by active participation in 75% departmental staff meetings, participation in OBH employee forums, participation in departmental training opportunities, task forces, work groups, collaborative self-scheduling and on-call coverage, committees, and community events.
  • Demonstrates Leadership capacity as measured by active, documented review and knowledge of departmental policies and procedures, collaboration/consultation with team members when P&P questions arise, peer interactions, ability of respond appropriately to questions in the absence of Director. Requests consultation as necessary.
  • Demonstrates active participation in the Development of self, team, department and organization as measured by timely follow through on projects/tasks, involvement in procedure development, Quality initiatives, cross training as necessary, other duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrates ability to Manage Time in a productive manner as measured by testing turnaround times, project completion, CEU completion, and follow through on assignments.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and participation in Regulatory Compliance/ Accreditation activities. Adheres to ALARA and Radiation Safety guidelines. Documentation is consistent with Federal and ACR regulatory guidelines as demonstrated by timely, accurate and organized documentation.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited school of Radiologic Technology. Must possess a current ARRT (R) (MR) within 6 months of hire. 
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Healthcare Provider status is required upon hire.
  • One year of MRI work experience preferred.

Other Information

  • This is a full-time (36 hours a week), benefit eligible position within the Radiology Department.
  • This position is expected to take call on a rotating basis with a required response time of 30 minutes.
  • The work schedule will be discussed further in the interview.
