About Vidant Medical Center

Vidant Medical Center is a fully accredited, 900+ bed regional referral facility encompassing a Level-1 Trauma Center and extensive inpatient and outpatient services including intensive and intermediate care, pediatrics, bariatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, pain management and psychiatry.


  • Maintains a key system of over 140 masters under two grandmasters. Keeps codes up to date so proper key can be located for proper door. Receives key requests and notes proper authorization. Locates and cuts key(s) if necessary, and issues key(s) after it has been tried for proper fit. Expands key system to include new areas and/or additions. Repins or replaces worn cylinders as necessary.
  • Changes lock each time key is lost or security is compromised. Provides a new key to authorized staff in the Pharmacy or the Nursing Unit where the narcotic and/or drug boxes or cabinets are located. Repairs drug carts, drawers, and broken locks. Extracts broken keys from locks. Installs push button locks in designated areas and resets combinations as necessary.
  • Cuts holes for locks in desks, cabinets, or lockers, and installs locks and provides keys. Maintains identification system. Unlocks and cuts locks off if necessary and when authorized to do so.
  • Repairs door closures to maintain integrity of fire rated walls and assemblies. Checks for proper operation of security magnets and repairs when necessary. Installs card readers and electric strikes. Repairs sliding doors. Installs, adjusts, and repairs panic door hardware.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.  

Minimum Requirements

  • High School plus less than 1 year of formal training or education;  Locksmith training or related courses.
  • Should have acquired training in master pinning of locks to 4th degree "Grand Master Keying". Proficiency in wafer locks and record keeping.
  • An internship for two (2) years is desirable.
  • Certification from a nationally recognized correspondence school, or community college.
  • Four to five years experience may result from carpentry related employment and/or training, including the installation of locks and hardware in a construction setting. On-the-job training or instruction in the repair and replacement of locks and hardware components constitutes acceptable progressive experience. 
  • Locksmith License required through the North Carolina Locksmith Licensing Board.
