The James and Connie Maynard Children's Hospital at Vidant Medical Center offers 197 beds and bassinets and an array of specialized services unequaled in eastern North Carolina. The Lactation Program Assistant is preferably certified through the International Board of Lactation Consultants or has successfully completed the requirements of the NC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program. The Lactation Program Assistant (LPA) works with a Lactation Specialist RN to provide family centered maternity newborn care breastfeeding support to patients and their families.  The LPA will make inpatient visits and follow-up phone calls to aid in the establishment and maintenance of breastfeeding. The LPA will provide assistance to patients and families in Maternal Expressions Breastfeeding Boutique.

  • Reinforce breastfeeding education under the supervision of the Lactation Specialist or RN while practicing the 10 Steps of Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative. 
  • Provide family centered maternity newborn care inpatient and outpatient follow-up support visits through Maternal Expressions.
  • Identify patient behavior that might indicate the need for additional support,  or referral to a Lactation Specialist.
  • Assist in teaching infant feeding classes.
  • Facilitate the Breastfeeding Support Group as delegated by Lactation Specialist.
  • Facilitate Maternal Expressions rentals and sales.
  • Maintain Maternal Expression inventory, expand the product line and the facilitate pump rental program as delegated.
  • Document in the Electronic Health Record and The Lactation Consultant software.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School plus less than 1 year of formal training or education. Basic course in Breast-feeding and Nutrition Support.
  • Ability to speak Spanish preferred to work with the high number of Hispanic clients in the program.
  • Must demonstrate competency in principles of breast-feeding support.
  • Related Work Experience: 3 months to l year
  • Because this is a peer counselor position, the person must have personal breast-feeding experience-must have breastfed an infant for a minimum of 6 months. Previous experience in a Human Service position preferred, but not required.
