Position Summary

The Inpatient Coding Specialist reviews medical record documentation, extracts data, and applies appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes for complex outpatient hospital, ambulatory surgery, intermediate level of inpatient accounts and behavior health to support hospital billing, internal and external reporting, research and regulatory compliance. The specialist complies with the ICD-9-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting as well as other nationally established rules and regulations for coding assignment.

The Inpatient Coding Specialist Provide code assignment for the following intermediate levels of inpatient accounts: general medicine/ surgery and inpatient rehab/ psych accounts. The specialist is responsbile  for reviewing claims and correcting edits through CAC/ARMS.


Minimum Requirements

  • Associate's Degree in Health Information Technology or Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Management required
  • AHIMA credentials (RHIA or RHIT) required
  • 1 year relevant coding experience required
  • Hospital - Coding and Central Business Office: CCS credentials with 4 additional years (5 total years) experience coding in an acute care HIM department may be substituted for the required education and credentials
  • Medical Group - Coding and Central Business Office: CCS, CCS-P or CPC credentials with 4 additional years (5 total years) of professional fee coding experience may be substituted for the required education and credentials
