Information Services at Vidant Health

Vidant Health offers comprehensive Information Technology (IT) services and infrastructure to support and enable all aspects of organizational operations. Our IT division consists of a state-of-the-art data center located in Greenville, NC. The data center services all information technology needs of Vidant Health facilities. All Vidant Health owned or leased hospitals are on a common IT platform, including our electronic health record (EHR) that uses Epic's suite of applications. Vidant Health has achieved Meaningful Use Stage 2 recognition and is also approaching Stage 7 for HIMSS Analytics’ Electronic Medical Records Adoption Model (EMRAM) recognition.

Position Summary

Informatics Education Specialist functions as a knowledgeable EHR consultant, trainer, educator and evaluator responsible for supporting and training end users on clinical systems functionality and workflows, ensuring optimal use of clinical technology to achieve system-wide strategic priorities. The Informatics Education Specialist applies concepts of adult learning principles, generational learning differences, and learning modalities (auditory, visual, and kinesthetic) to achieve desired outcomes. The Informatics Education Specialist works closely with Information Services, Vidant operations leadership, and Quality to achieve key responsibilities.


  • Acts as Informatics point of contact for EHR education needs.

  • Demonstrates proficiency with EHR navigation and documentation.

  • Facilitates learning in an environment conducive to achieving the desired cognitive, affective, and psychomotor outcomes required for optimal EHR use.

  • Conducts needs assessments related to nursing documentation practices and optimal use of the EHR.

  • Participates in testing new applications, enhancement requests, and system upgrades.

  • Obtains and maintains certification as Epic Principle Trainer as assigned.

  • Obtains credentialing in Epic modules being taught.

  • Collaborates with IS analysts/builders and Informatics Nurses to develop and maintain educational materials including manuals, Bulletins, Tip Sheets, and other methods of communication/education as needed.

  • Participates in developing, managing, and maintaining the training environment(s) to support ongoing training needs.

  • Implements curriculum and training plans for new implementations/projects requiring education.

  • Utilizes a variety of strategies to assess and evaluate learners needs, engagement, level of understanding, and knowledge transfer.

  • Ensures training content and delivery methods meets clinicians needs; facilitates end user training validation and sign off.

  • Investigates new and innovative ways to communicate changes and provide education to nursing staff.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in clinical discipline with 2 years demonstrated EHR experience.

  • In lieu of bachelors degree, 3-5 years demonstrated EHR (electronic health record) formal education experience in a classroom setting.

  • Experience as a super user desired.

  • Participation in vendor user groups, education forums and other professional associations may require out-of-town travel.
