Information Services at Vidant Health

Vidant Health offers comprehensive Information Technology (IT) services and infrastructure to support and enable all aspects of organizational operations. Our IT division consists of a state-of-the-art data center located in Greenville, NC. The data center services all information technology needs of Vidant Health facilities. All Vidant Health owned or leased hospitals are on a common IT platform, including our electronic health record (EHR) that uses Epic's suite of applications. Vidant Health has achieved Meaningful Use Stage 2 recognition and is also approaching Stage 7 for HIMSS Analytics’ Electronic Medical Records Adoption Model (EMRAM) recognition.

Position Summary

The Informatics Education Specialist functions as a knowledgeable EHR consultant, trainer, educator and evaluator responsible for supporting and training end users on clinical systems functionality and workflows, ensuring optimal use of clinical technology to achieve system-wide strategic priorities. The Informatics Education Specialist applies concepts of adult learning principles, generational learning differences, and learning modalities (auditory, visual, and kinesthetic) to achieve desired outcomes. The Informatics Education Specialist works closely with Information Services, Vidant operations leadership, and Quality to achieve key responsibilities.


  • Assists with the development  of detailed workflow and role based curriculum and materials
  • Assists in maintaining the training environment through application configuration, including building or modifying patients and entering or modifying data to support curriculum
  • Troubleshoots the training environment for issues and works with IS and/or Epic to resolve issues in a timely manner
  • Trains end users, super users, and additional classroom trainers as assigned
  • Assists with the development of workflow based tip sheets and bulletins for clinical users
  • Provides go live training and support
  • Builds new patients or modifies existing patients as necessary in the training environment and enters or modifies data to match training scenarios
  • Tests the  training environment and works with IS and/or Epic to resolve issues in a timely manner
  • Assists in coordinating the logistics associated with training delivery preparation activities such as copying and assembling printed materials, scheduling and maintenance of training rooms, equipment preparation, and post-training clean up
  • Assists in data collection activities for training metrics, including the collection of learner satisfaction metrics
  • Assists with the verification and validation of software programs utilized in training programs
  • Monitors the training scheduling calendar and books rooms
  • Participates in testing of upcoming enhancements and upgrades of assigned modules
  • Delivers assigned competency and proficiency evaluations
  • Demonstrates proficiency with assigned Epic modules
  • Uses a variety of strategies to assess and evaluate student learning during training classes/sessions
  • Applies concepts of adult learning principles, generational learning differences, and learning modalities (auditory, visual, and kinesthetic)
  • Assists with the development of web-based learning modules using software applications such as Captivate, Camtasia, etc.
  • Travels to various Vidant Health sites and facilities to provide services and support as assigned
  • Participates in rotating 24x7 on call support as assigned
  • Demonstrates flexibility by supporting go live implementations for 24x7 support as assigned
  • Manages individual work efforts and completes assignments under limited supervision

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in education, nursing, information technology, allied health professions, business or relevant work experience required
  • 2 years demonstrated EHR experience preferred
  • Instructional design preferred
  • Adobe Captivate experience preferred
  • Formal teach experience preferred
  • Obtains and maintains certification as Epic Principle Trainer as assigned
  • Experience as a super user preferred
