Position Summary

Image Guided Surgical Technologist (IGST) is a CT Technologist that is qualified through credentialing and clinical experience to operate Image Guided equipment during surgical procedures. In addition the IGST will be designated as the Laser Safety Officer for main operating room. This individual works with physicians and other surgical personnel to provide support in real time during surgery.


  • Performs specialized tasks associated with operation of Image Guided Surgical (IGS) equipment (CT, Navigation Systems, AIRO).
  • Performs specialized tasks associated with maintaining safety procedures related to laser use in the department through policies, monitoring, audits and education.    
  • Works with appropriate vendors to evaluates all equipment (CT, Navigation, AIRO, and Lasers) for clinical outcomes and quality data collection. 
  • Works with Biomed and designated appropriate vendors to ensure yearly preventative maintenance is performed and required software updates and completed.
  • Maintains accurate patient records and places patient orders as needed for patient scans.
  • Serves as a preceptor for students, and surgical staff. 
  • Provides on-site guidance and assistance to surgeons and OR personnel by evaluating options and problem-solving during procedures in order to maximize IGS and Laser usage.
  • Analyzes, resolves and repairs product issues through analysis and expertise when possible. Consults with appropriate vendors for difficult repairs requiring outside interventions.
  • Directs and assists Radiology staff in performing necessary scans prior to surgery when applicable.
  • Educates/trains surgeons, OR staff, Biomedical and Information Technologies staff, on the use of IGS and Laser as needed. 
  • Participates as part of the team and uses expertise to contribute on quality improvement projects. 
  • Attends meetings and conferences to maintain competency.
  • Keeps abreast of developments regarding IGS products and services via ongoing training and individual research.
  • Assist with yearly X-ray protective appeal safety checks.
  • Works closes with radiology to obtain new employee X-ray badges, coordinates department monthly badge checks and replacements as needed.   
  • Performs other work related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • BLS Certification through the American Heart Association is required
  • CT Certified or eligible for CT certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists required.
  • Must obtain Laser Safety Officer Certification within six (6) months. 
  • A two year previous experience in Radiology preferred.
