Information Services at Vidant Health

Vidant Health offers comprehensive Information Technology (IT) services and infrastructure to support and enable all aspects of organizational operations. Our IT division consists of a state-of-the-art data center located in Greenville, NC. The data center services all information technology needs of Vidant Health facilities. All Vidant Health owned or leased hospitals are on a common IT platform, including our electronic health record (EHR) that uses Epic's suite of applications. Vidant Health has achieved Meaningful Use Stage 2 recognition and is also approaching Stage 7 for HIMSS Analytics’ Electronic Medical Records Adoption Model (EMRAM) recognition.

Position Summary

The Director reports directly to the Vice President, Analytics and Strategy and is a critical, experienced, multi-disciplinary executive member of the enterprise analytics leadership team.

The Director is accountable for leading the continuous development of advanced analytics capabilities, service delivery, and uncovering drivers of business and clinical operations and performance.

Enterprise Analytics at Vidant Health is built on a culture of experimentation, innovation, and consultative approach. As a senior leader, the Director ensures collaborative partnerships with leaders across the enterprise. Through routine, direct engagement with executive leadership, the Director's team provides support for the development of actionable insights and provides a critical linkage between the strategies of both analytics and the organization to achieve breakthrough performance for all Vidant Health stakeholders.

The successful Director brings together a diverse set of executive skills and experience, including analytics tools, technologies, and methods, business acumen, management consulting, and professional services / analytics-based knowledge delivery practices, to continuously improve Vidant Health's analytics capabilities.

The Director leverages this experience to lead multiple teams of highly-skilled analytics managers and expert analysts, developers, and business analysts. Under the Director's leadership drives improvements, helps to translate business challenges into accessible, value-added recommendations in support of strategic and tactical initiatives across the enterprise.

The Director is responsible for prioritizing, developing, and delivering solutions, managing relationships with key stakeholders and vendors, strategic planning, financial management, development and leadership of the team, and innovation.

This position requires a person who can work within an integrated group, and can manage and mentor personnel with diverse backgrounds and knowledge. The director must be detail, action, solution and results oriented and must demonstrate creativity, foresight and mature judgment in managing the production reporting environment.


  • Lead the analytics development and consulting function consisting of teams of highly-skilled business and clinical analysts. Leverage care delivery outcomes, claims experience, utilization, quality, membership, demographic, lifestyle, and other data sources across the Vidant Health enterprise to derive knowledge of drivers of enterprise business and clinical performance. Provide strategic and tactical consulting services / recommendations that improve performance and demonstrate value for executive and senior leadership. Major activities include:

  • Collaborate with executive and senior leaders to determine and prioritize the need for new, complex business, clinical, and operational analyses, simulation models, performance and quality metrics, or regulatory reporting requirements.

  • Effectively hire, train, orient, coach/develop, and retain analytics team members capable of providing both advanced analytics and business consulting services.

  • Successfully direct a team of advanced analytics and clinical experts in the discovery and delivery of analytics-driven knowledge to support business, clinical, and operational decision-making and to satisfy quality and regulatory reporting requirements.

  • Enhance the power and utility of business, clinical, operational, and quality analyses by continuously assessing the value of new data sources (both internal and external), methods, and visualizations.

  • Drive the visibility and value proposition (brand) of the analytics function by leading complex analytic support for, and routinely delivering results and strategic and tactical recommendations to, executives, department leaders, and initiative sponsors across the Vidant Health enterprise.

  • Communicate knowledge discovered by the advanced analytics team to key leaders in order to facilitate adoption of a knowledge-driven culture across the enterprise.

  • Recommend tools, methods, and skill sets for adoption in order to develop and maintain leading edge analytics capabilities.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher

  • Major in data science/ analytics, computer science, mathematics, statistics, business, or social science with heavy quantitative analysis, or related field strongly desired.

  • Minimum of seven (7) years of leadership experience leveraging advanced analytics methods and large scale information systems. 

  • Experience in an analytics leadership/management role with a strong operational background and proven track record of accomplishments in change management and innovation within a large, complex, multi-location organization.

  • Seasoned professional with at least five years health care experience that has a deep understanding of health care operations as well as the current business issues and trends influencing health care providers.

  • Exceptional communication skills, with ability to interact and deliver compelling messages to executives, stakeholders as well as internal and external customers.

  • Familiarity with data governance and security/privacy compliance including clinical research.

  • Demonstrated expertise re: information technology, Big Data structures, and application of advanced analytics for business and clinical analysis, operations analysis, and business process modeling.

  • Experience with data access, data visualization, and statistical analysis tools such as R, SAS, Tableau, and Python or similar applications.

  • Understanding of HIPAA and other applicable statutes or regulations concerning patient privacy and appropriate use and sharing of healthcare data.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience building, leading, developing, and retaining teams of highly-skilled, quantitative analysis staff with diverse educational and experiential backgrounds.

  • Prior hands-on experience developing, applying, and interpreting results from successful (i.e., practical and impactful) complex analytics projects.

  • Expert understanding of data structures to support application of advanced analytics tools for business, clinical, operations, and quality analysis.

  • Experience with data access tools such as SQL, statistical analysis/modeling tools including SAS, R, Python, or similar applications, and data visualization tools such as Tableau. Ability to effectively mentor staff in the application of these tools to independently solve real-world problems and delivery findings.

  • Business and management consulting acumen to discern and deliver analytic findings with practical value to clinical, business, and operational teams and executive leaders.

  • Maintain knowledge of recent developments in "big data" analytics applications in healthcare.

Preferred Requirements

  • Master's Degree or higher

  • Experience with Six Sigma, LEAN, Balanced Scorecard or similar process improvement approaches.

  • Practical use of design thinking, innovation or experimentation strategies designed to improve utilization and outcome of analytics products.

  • Five-or-more years of experience applying advanced analytics tools and methods to healthcare claims and/or care delivery data to support business activities.

  • Five-or-more years of experience in a healthcare operations environment (health system or insurer).

  • Experience with analytics development and delivery best practices in industries other than healthcare.

  • Application of advanced analytics methods to healthcare delivery or insurance problems.
