  • Prepare patient specimens as required for laboratory testing; collect, label, transport, and triage specimens; separate serum, plasma, or cellular components from blood samples, process surgically obtained tissues for culture or cytologic examination; split samples to be sent to other laboratory sections for testing. Perform laboratory tests in appropriate departments to include: cross-matching, HLA antibody. Screening and antibody identification, HLA antigen typings by serologic and molecular methods. Testing is performed using established safety guidelines throughout the department. Monitor test results to assure test quality and validity: insure accurate specimen identification throughout all phases of laboratory testing; monitor instruments for proper performance; review test results for accuracy before report leaves the laboratory; troubleshoot and recommend solutions to problems with procedure and instruments; report any unusual results to a supervisor for review. Communicate results in a timely manner, especially those that may be life-threatening to the patient: enter data into laboratory computer system in accurate and timely manner; resolve computer related problems and coordinate downtime recovery; retrieve data from laboratory computer system and report to appropriate health care personnel by phone as requested; call unusual or erroneous results to the attention of supervisory personnel, as appropriate; assure communication of relevant information to appropriate personnel on the incoming or outgoing shift.
  • Maintain properly documented records of activities: compile results of tests; maintain logs of tests administered and their results; insure that results and patient charges are entered into computer; perform and record daily and other periodic quality control procedures and document deficiencies, when they occur.
  • Clean and maintain laboratory equipment and environment: perform routine maintenance and cleaning procedures to assure proper functioning of laboratory equipment; leave work area in a clean and orderly condition at the end of each shift; perform other maintenance and cleaning functions as assigned or necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned: may assist in orientation or training of new or less experienced employees, students, medical interns or residents; may assist in ordering or shelving of stock, reagents, chemicals or other laboratory supplies; may rotate from one laboratory section to another.
  • Participate in the department on-call schedule for transplant donor and recipient workups.
  • Demonstrates appropriate, caring behavior in the workplace, treating patients, their families, visitors and staff with respect and dignity.


  • Four year college degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Biology, Chemistry, Medical Technology or related science is required.
  • Candidates qualify to be employed as or promoted to Histocompatibility Technologist II if they have MLS(ASCP) or CHT(ASHI) certification and one year of full time experience in a hospital lab setting or 3 years of full time experience in a hospital setting without ASCP or ABHI certifications required.

 Preferred Requirements

  • MLS(ASCP) or CHT(ABHI) or equivalent certification.
  • Formal training in Immunology or Genetics.
  • 1-3 years experience in a clinical laboratory as a Histocompatibility Technologist required.


  • Full-time  7:30am - 4pm with frequent on-call assignments.
