Position Summary

As the Health Care Spanish Interpreter, you will be assigned to work at Vidant Duplin Hospital, Kenansville, NC, to provide oral interpretation, as well as limited written translation, between speakers with limited English proficiency (LEP) and the healthcare team. Communication includes conveying meaning accurately between and among patients with LEP or other communication barriers, their families, and team members. Must provide direct communication effectively to supervisors, co-workers, and all team members. Direct communications consist of computers, telephone, in written form, email, fax, pager, and/or in-person. Must have knowledge of computers systems (including hardware and software), to assist with basic team member training and troubleshooting. Willingness to follow ethical principles, including accepted interpreter codes of ethics and standards of practice, in identifying and resolving conflicts related to the meaning of words, concepts, practices, values or behaviors. You will act as a clarifier and a culture broker within encounters, as appropriate.

To be a Health Care Spanish Interpreter, you must be resourceful of Vidant Health and of other relevant sources of information. Extend warmth, compassion, and respect to patients, families, and all team members. This includes dignity, patience, tolerance, friendliness, and courtesy. Willingness to assist with other departmental needs, as required.

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate Degree or higher

  • National Certification as a Certified Medical Interpreter or Certified Healthcare Interpreter is required within 2 years of hire.

  • Zero to two years related experience

  • Demonstrated language proficiency in speaking and listening in primary and secondary languages.  Proficiency must be equivalent to Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) skill level 3+ or higher.

  • Bilingual professional experience that required daily interaction in primary and secondary languages.

  • Degrees of equivalent level attained outside of the U.S. can be used to meet the educational requirement.
