Position Summary

Works under the supervision of the Group Exercise Program Coordinator to provide members with a diverse program of group exercise in a professional, friendly manner. Group Exercise instructors lead classes so that each participant receives an appropriate workout in the manner described by the class format. Instructors project a healthy, friendly attitude towards the participants. Safety is considered top priority throughout each class.


  • Teaches all classes assigned on the monthly schedule, or finds a suitable replacement in case of illness or emergency.
  • Begins and ends all classes on time.
  • Maintains confidentiality of written, verbal and computerized patient information.
  • Projects a motivating and encouraging attitude towards members.
  • Conveys a positive attitude in working with the public and fellow employees.
  • Dresses neatly in proper aerobic attire.
  • Demonstrates a team-based approach to his/her work.
  • Makes sure all equipment used during class is put away properly.
  • Uses tapes/cd's in careful manner, cleaning and re-filling music after each class.
  • Explains rationale behind warm-up, cool-down, stretching portions of class.
  • Monitors heart rates at appropriate intervals while discussing rationale.
  • Assures that each participant is exercising at an appropriate level for his/her health and age category.
  • Teaches exercise classes according to accepted principles and guidelines.
  • Chooses music appropriate for exercise population and adheres to appropriate volume policies.
  • Maintains a neat environment.
  • Informs manager of time-off requests and need to leave early in a timely manner.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must have a high school diploma.
  • CPR certification, required.
  • If an instructor is not certified, he/she must have plans to be certified.
  • Two years minimum of group exercise experience is required.
  • Must be a team player, motivator, and understand the importance of customer service.
  • Must have experience working in the fitness/wellness profession.

Other Information

  • Part-time, as needed.
  • Hours will vary.
