  • Counseling/Clinical: Provides detailed cancer risk assessment and genetic counseling to adult patients/families referred to VCC Genetics program, including: pre-appointment review of patient medical history and family history and calculating the patient's risk for developing specific cancers and determinng the likelihood that the patient carries a hereditary cancer gene mutation. Has knowledge of cancer risk assessment tools including BRACA PRO, Penn II, the Claus Model, the Gail Model, the IBIS Model and other models, and will be effective in explaining risk information in a clear and understandable manner. Facilitates patient decision making by meeting with patients, writing a detailed summary of the patient visit to the referring physician, coordination of genetic testing, notification of results to patients, and coordination of patient care and/or referral to other specialists. Communicates results of genetic testing to patients and outside referring physicians and works in conjunction with physicians to develop a care plan, or makes appropriate referrals to medical, surgical, gyn oncology, and others as needed. Attends multidisciplinary cancer conferences routinely. Coordinates day-to-day operations with the team to ensure timely, efficient, and high quality care, including tracking and operational metrics. Ensures integration of ethical standards and core values into every day work activities.
  • Liaison: Serves as a community liaison for presentations and outreach activities for specific programs and projects. Assists in the development and preparation of promotional and educational materials as well as various other media.
  • Professional Development/Student Supervision:  Attends local and national education conferences to maintain appropriate continuing education. Maintains membership in professional organizations to develop knowledge and resources through networking, continuing education, and active participation. Promotes the development of the VCC Genetics Program, through networking with other physicians and health care providers. Evaluates genetic counseling student performance by providing direct supervision and oral/written review to aid in improving their knowledge and skills. Provides educational presentations to genetic counseling students, medical professionals, local schools and support groups to increase awareness of genetic conditions.
  • Special Projects: Gathers and assembles data for clinical research purposes and to measure outcomes. Publishes and presents clinical genetics information by gathering and summarizing data to contribute to genetics literature. Coordinates and provides information for various special projects for the clinic manager or equivalent. Identifies and implements tests and procedures that are the most cost-effective and beneficial for the practice setting and to minimize financial toxicity to patient. Works with Laboratory Services to evaluate genetic testing lab tests; what should be offered here, what should be sent out.
  • Service Excellence: Is accountable to demonstrate and foster Vidant Health Service Excellence behaviors.

Minimum Requirements

  • Masters degree in Genetic Counseling is required.
  • Genetics Counselor license in the state of North Carolina is required.
  • Eligible within 1 year of employment, or Certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling or American Board of Medical Genetics (ABGC / ABMG).
  • No substitutions
  • Less than 1 year experience in Genetic Counseling internship is required.
  • Other academic institutions or pharmaceutical companies as genetics counselor is preferred.
