About Vidant Medical Center and the Children's ED

We are the only tertiary facility in eastern North Carolina designed, equipped and staffed with trained emergency pediatric providers and nurses. The services will be provided to infants, toddlers, small children, teens and young adults with an emphasis on patient-family centered care.

The Children's Emergency Department is a 16-bed unit that includes 2 Resuscitation bays. Our goal is to meet the needs of the children and their families by providing safe, child friendly, quality care and incorporating Child Life Specialists. The physician faculty is affiliated with the Brody School of Medicine and teaches medical
students, interns and resident physicians.


  • In addition to the basic responsibilities per RN job description.
  • Collaborates effectively with customers.
  • Serves as consultant to all departments within their division for problem solving and decision-making.
  • Serves as a resource for patient throughput.
  • Coordinates inpatient and outpatient referrals by working collaboratively with physicians, office staff, hospital placement staff, hospital Pt Care Coordinator, Pt Placement Facilitator, and patient care staff. Promotes timely acceptance of transfer of regionally referred patients to appropriate areas either emergency department or inpatient units.
  • Communicates and collaborates with physicians, clinicians, in-house patient care departments, divisional departments, service line units, Patient Care Facilitators, ReferDirect, EastCare as appropriate, and referring facilities as it relates to clinical screening/needs, referrals, placement, bed assignments and acceptance of patients.
  • Creates climate to maintain and facilitate open lines of communications for the promotion of effective working relationships.
  • Role models the Standards of Performance
  • Assess bed availability.
  • Assess patients waiting and develops a plan for all admissions and transfers.
  • Communicates placement plan to involved patient care staff.
  • Identifies clinical and departmental barriers to placements and works with divisional leadership to problem solve.
  • Identification and documentation of system issues.
  • Attends daily bed briefing with hospital leadership to identify division/house needs, and facilitate appropriate patient placements.
  • Responds to requests via IWARN pager and phone calls in a timely fashion. Ongoing evaluation, communication, and documentation of dynamic placement plan to Patient Care Coordinators, Patient Placement Facilitator, and others prn.
  • Initiates the Emergency Services Capacity Plan (as applicable) when indicted. Uses appropriate means or methods available including escalation to appropriate administration level to identify clinical and departmental throughput barriers to expedite movement and decompression of waiting room.
  • Maintains the accountability for quality outcomes.
  • Promotes an environment for empowerment, continuous quality improvement and service excellence.
  • Assesses, intervenes and evaluates unit functioning by making frequent rounds within emergency services within service line and provide assistance with patient care as needed for increased unit acuity and decompression.
  • Secures and allocates human and material resources according to identified needs.
  • Identifies, intervenes and informs administrative staff on potential risk management issues.
  • Initiates service recovery when indicated.
  • Assures hospital compliance with Federal Regulatory mandates such as HIPAA, EMTALA, etc.
  • Maintains financial accountability.
  • Utilizes personnel in a cost effective manner and in accordance with clinical unit policies to staff to patient volume and acuity.
  • Identifies and encourages cost saving opportunities.
  • Participates and adheres to overall hospital financial plan and goals.
  • Utilizes principles of program management to effectively meet customer needs.
  • Functions as in-house administrative representative for promotion of VMC and Vidant Health mission.
  • Actively supports Hospital and Patient Care Services mission and philosophy.
  • Assists in adherence to policy and procedures throughout Service Line.
  • Demonstrates effective patient assessment skills through the ability to prioritize and expedite appropriate pt placement.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills to provide population appropriate services.

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Nursing required
  • RN Licensure active in NC required
  • Must have certification for specialty or obtain one year of hire
  • 1-2 years of experience, with one year in specialty.
  • For Adult and Children¿s ED, must obtain TNCC within one year of hire
  • Preferred Position Requirements
  • 1 year Clinical Ladder status preferred
  • 1 year experience as Charge and Trauma Role in emergency setting preferred
  • PALS within one year of hire
