The Educational Nurse Specialist (ENS) is a registered nurse who executes professional development processes to develop and maintain competence and lifelong learning. The education nurse specialist enhances nursing professional practice among nurses at all levels of the organization and functions as a leader, innovator, facilitator and change agent. The ENS works within the Vidant Medical Center nursing professional practice model and operationalizes the scope and standards of practice for nursing professional development as ascribed by the American Nurses Association. The ENS utilizes research and best evidence to impact nursing professional development at Vidant Medical Center.


1. Develop, implement and evaluate professional development processes to ensure safe and quality care and outcomes.

  • Collaborate with nurse leaders and staff to develop educational conceptual models to support professional development.
  • Collaborate with leadership and staff to identify learning needs.
  • Analyze organizational learning needs to determined specialty educational processes.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate learning activities based on identified needs, standards of care and scope of practice by: identifying appropriate resources to meet learning needs, obtaining continuing education credits for designated educational activities, incorporating age specific knowledge and skills, creating an environment conducive to learning, tracking staff compliance and utilizing outcomes evaluation processes.
  • Coordinate the development and evaluation of orientation processes including performance based development initial and reassessment.
  • Design and evaluate competency based orientation processes.
  • Serve as a resource and mentor for the professional development coordinators in implementing new nurse orientation and residency programs.

2. Serve as a consultant for professional development project and program management across service lines for the implementation of house-wide and unit specific educational activities.

  • Provide consultation to leadership and staff using communication and change theory.
  • Serve as a resource to leadership, the interdisciplinary healthcare team and staff to develop, implement and evaluate standards of care and policies and procedures in area of specialization.
  • Serve as a consultant for program planning, area agencies, subsidiaries and other Vidant Health entities.
  • Collaborate with the Center for Learning and Performance, EAHEC, Schools of Nursing and Medicine for program planning.
  • Contribute to professional development through assistance with clinical ladder, specialty certifications and other development tracks, e.g. education, quality care and improvement.
  • Contribute to career development of health care providers, e.g. homegrown, RN to BSN/MSN.
  • Participate in and/or facilitates nursing and hospital interdisciplinary committees and councils.

3. Support and advance clinical nursing practice through the facilitation and implementation of innovative professional development strategies.

  • Assess and identify professional development research studies.
  • Disseminate pertinent research and current information and theories in field of specialization.
  • Integrate relevant research into learning activities to promote positive patient outcomes.
  • Integrate evidence based research findings to support and advance nursing professional development.
  • Evaluate the impact of various learning activities on patient care, clinical outcomes and clinical practice.

4. Advance the knowledge and skills of nurses using evidence based practice, current literature and the conduct of research.

  • Participate in professional organizations.
  • Advance clinical expertise through conference attendance, literature reviews, scholarly and research activities.
  • Maintain professional network among colleagues

5. Facilitates the development of career and role transition processes.

  • Participate in quality programs, committees and councils.
  • Identify and report quality issues through data sources.
  • Utilize quality outcomes data to assist with planning and developing learning activities and strategies to improve patient care delivery and outcomes.
  • Incorporate learning activities and patient outcome data into service line, nurse sensitive indicator and organizational quality improvement initiatives.

6. Leads nursing professional development across service lines and specialties at Vidant Medical Center in collaboration with the Center for Learning and Performance.

  • Promote a learning environment that fosters the retention of employees.
  • Participate in marketing learning activities to the health care team.
  • Coordinate or participate in the marketing of student experiences, externships and the nurse residency program.
  • Develop and implement program initiatives that facilitate the attainment of organizational and nursing goals.
  • Incorporate learning activities and patient outcome data into service line, nurse sensitive indicator and organizational quality improvement initiatives.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master's Degree in nursing or a related specialty is required - with concentration in education preferred.

  • Current RN Licensure In North Carolina.

  • At least 5 years experience in clinical practice with evidence of clinical knowledge, leadership and teaching abilities; 2 additional years experience in area of specialty is desirable.
