Position Summary

The ED Technician I coordinates and facilitates direct patient care for emergency services patients within the service line. The ED Technician I assists the nurse and or physician with procedures such as wound care, clean and sterile dressings, urinary catheter insertions, and staple and suture insertions. In addition to procedures, the ED Technician I performs phlebotomy duties, point of care testing, and patient data collections


  • Performs direct patient care based on the requests and needs as specified by a patient and family, being age appropriate. Anticipates and prioritizes patient need. Assists the nurse and or physician with procedures, surgical preps, wound care, clean and sterile dressings, urinary catheterizations, staple and suture removal.
  • Obtains accurate vital signs, collects data, and communicates changes in the patient condition or findings outside normal parameters; may document care in the patients medical record; coordinates intradepartmental and interdepartmental patient care activities.
  • Performs phlebotomy duties, and ACCU check in accordance with unit and laboratory standards; Processes specimens, maintains appropriate point of care testing logs and quality checks, and reports test results for procedures performed.
  • Demonstrates Personal accountability; Complies with all hospital policies, procedures, and standards including dress code; and acts as a role model for students and other employees. Protects all confidential information and obeys all HIPAA regulations.
  • Completes all departmentally required education, competencies, and/or proficiencies including departmental specific requirements.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School or equivalent

  • Current Nurse Aide I with the North Carolina Division of Facility Services and completion of Emergency Technician (EMT) course with the current NC Certification.

  • CPR/ BLS is required through American Heart Association.

  • ACLS, within 6 months of hire

  • One year experience working with a Rescue Squad or Ambulance Service or Emergency Department is preferred.

  • Full-time (36 hours a week)

  • Nights - 7p to 7a
