The Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Coordinator provides the planning, programmatic development, implementation, coordination and evaluation of the Pediatric/Adult ECMO program

  •  Plans, develops, implements, coordinates and evaluates the ECMO program. 
  • Adheres to the general hospital standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships and team-building.

    • Assumes responsibility for keeping informed about changes in policies and procedures.
  •  Provides leadership to staff to ensure short and long-term goals are met by developing standards of performance and capitalizing on employee strengths, supporting the Mission, Vision, Core Values and Evidence-Based practice.  Assures appropriate orientation, education, credentialing, and continuing professional development for personnel. 
  • Serves as liaison between Respiratory Care Services and other hospital services.  Communicates regularly with management of other hospital departments in order to coordinate the various clinical services offered by the ECMO Department in order to ensure a coordinated program of care for patients. 
  • Participates in Quality Improvement initiatives written communication with management staff to identify problem areas, research concerns and provide possible resolutions.  Ensures all activities are in regulatory compliance with CMS, JCAHO, ELSO, hospital bylaws, Vidant Medical Center policy manual and departmental regulations, wage/hour laws, state inspections, licensure issues, CON, and compliance and internal audit regulations.  Performs activities including researching/gathering information on issues/complaints and seeking resolution. 
  • Assisting the Manager of Respiratory Care they will Create and maintain the budget for the ECMO program.  Reviews and makes recommendations for capital and non-capital equipment, in addition to forecasting, developing, implementing, monitoring and controlling budgets; providing variance reports; optimizing available resources; participating in capital, operational and salary budgeting; and preparing current and projected capital equipment expenditures. Ensures that appropriate supplies are available to provide ECMO as required. 
  • Establishes and implements clinical coverage requirements of an one to one patient /staff coverage with call back up, task assignments and allocation of clinical personnel to assure compliance with departmental commitments and quality standards of the ECMO program. Assures workload is measured and resources are allocated based on industry benchmarks and patient needs to optimize the provision of quality, cost effective care. Facilitates and monitors the appropriate utilization of staff based on credentialing, education and experience. Reports on these duties to the Manager of Respiratory Care and the Medical Directors of the ECMO program as scheduled. 
  • Provides clinical consultation and suggestions for patient care based on age group served. Ensures age/developmental appropriate patient care is provided in accordance with Age-Specific Guidelines for the specific age group served. 
  • Coordinates educational activities of the Extra Corporeal Life Support Specialists, medical staff, nursing staff, patients and families, and other allied health services to ensure that knowledge and ability for safe and competent clinical performance of ECMO procedures are maintained. Assures that the staff maintains competency via the following requirements:  Q three Month positive review of at least one case coverage or, completion of a wet lab re-certification. 
  • Serves as a representative from Vidant Medical Center to the Extra Corporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO).  Attends national and regional ECMO conferences. Maintains current knowledge of ECMO procedures, techniques, and research and enhances his or her knowledge to improve professional growth and development. 
  • Assist the manager of Respiratory Care in facilitating scheduled meetings with the oversight team. This team will review Quality reports, Equipment concerns, Staffing , SSE’s, and patient post procedure follow up. 
  • Completes a prompt review of any major complication or death of a patient while on ECMO. Reports the findings to the oversight team. 
  • Assist the manager of Respiratory Care in establishing a plan to meet or exceed the ELSO standards. Maintains the ECMO services at the “Center of Excellence Award “ requirement level established by ELSO. 
  • Maintains ECMO informational database. 
  • Maintains ACLS and PALS.

 Minimum Requirements


    Four year college degree is required. Graduate of an AMA-approved Respiratory Care Program with a BS in Health Sciences field. etc. (ELSO) class. Master's Degree preferred.

    Registered (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care and licensed to practice as a RCP in the state of North Carolina.

    Two years of leadership in ECMO with an AA Respiratory Degree will substitute for the Bachelors Degree.

    A minimum of five years experience consisting of a combination of either clinical respiratory therapy or nursing with level III NICU, PICU or adult critical care, with completion of Extra Corporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) class. 2 years of experience in an ECMO position preferred.


  • Hours:  Full-time 40 hours weekly (1.0 FTE)
