Responsibilities

The Director of Nursing Research is a nurse with advanced preparation in research principles and methodology, who also has expert content knowledge in a clinical area(s). This shared position between Vidant Medical Center (VMC) and East Carolina University (ECU) drives quality improvement and research activities that support program, departmental, and organizational strategic research priorities. This leadership role undertakes planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive Nursing Clinical Research Program across clinical, educational, and administrative practice.

The position dedicates 80% of time to providing leadership and administrative oversight for the Nursing Research program at Vidant Medical Center. This position is a joint appointment between VMC and ECU/CON, and the remaining 20% of the position is dedicated to ECU/CON as Director for the EC Center for Nursing Leadership, adjunct faculty, and facilitating the academic practice partnership.

  • Provide administrative oversight of VMC Nursing Research Program. Foster the development of a practice environment/culture conducive to the conduct and utilization of Nursing Research. Develop resources that foster staff involvement and use of the Nursing Research process. Integrate Nursing Research and evidence-based activities with quality and patient
  • Manage fiscal and personal resources in the Nursing Research Office. Provide administrative overview to the review, coordination, tracking and monitoring of Research proposal/activities at Vidant Medical Center involving Vidant Medical Center employees, Researchers conducting studies at Vidant Medical Center and patients of Vidant Medical Center. Interfaces with Vidant Health entities to support and advise on matters regarding Nursing Research.
  • Facilitate and mentor nursing personnel to develop, conduct, and disseminate Nursing Research studies. Promote collaborative Clinical Research initiatives among nursing personnel, College of Nursing, and other health agencies. Work collaboratively with Health Sciences Library, Biostaticians, and other consultants on Nursing Research initiatives. Facilitate Nursing Research within Vidant Medical Center and in the professional community.
  • Consult with staff, students, and clinical and administrative groups, physicians and residents on Clinical Research projects and process. Serve as a Clinical Research consultant to agencies outside of Vidant Medical Center, i.e. Vidant Health entities, Human Protection Administrators.
  • Collaborate to identify, measure, and evaluate patient/family outcomes, especially those sensitive to nursing care. Facilitate and serve as a resource in preparation of abstracts, manuscripts, paper/poster presentations, and grant initiatives.
  • Design and conduct Nursing Research studies. Collaborate with Vidant Medical Center Finance on clinical trial billing, BSOM Clinical Trial Office, HIMS, Pharmacy, Material Services, Laboratory, and Radiology on review of Clinical Research initiatives and compliance matters. Serve on relevant nursing and Vidant Medical Center committees to develop and advance strategies and methods for integrating critical thinking and scientific rigor into practice, education, and management.
  • Collaborate with nursing leaders and educators to develop innovative in-service and continuing education programs to educate, mentor, and expand knowledge for Vidant Medical Center staff at all levels of Clinical Research and evidence based practice. Engage nursing staff, advanced practice nurses, and managers in improving patient care outcomes and professional practice through involvement in Clinical Research Initiatives.
  • Demonstrate on-going professional career self-development. Participate in research educational programs and conferences. Maintain active membership in professional organizations relevant to Nursing Research and leadership. Participate on local, state, and national committees and task forces related to Nursing Research

Minimum Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Nursing or a related field with a strong emphasis in research. If Doctorate is in related field, a Master's degree in Nursing is required.
  • 5 years or greater, experience with Research in clinical setting.
  • Expertise in nursing practice, education, quality improvement strategies, and research.
  • Ability to write and publish in professional journals and texts.
  • Knowledge, training, and/or experience in the area of human subjects protection.
  • Registered Nurse Licensed in North Carolina.
  • Grant writing experience preferred.
