Vidant Health offers comprehensive Information Technology (IT) services and infrastructure to support and enable all aspects of organizational operations. Our IT division consists of a state-of-the-art data center located in Greenville, NC. The data center services all information technology needs of Vidant Health facilities.  Vidant Health has been recognized as one of the 100 Most Wired healthcare organizations by Hospitals and Health Networks magazine. All Vidant Health owned or leased hospitals are on a common IT platform, including our electronic health record (EHR) that uses Epic's suite of applications. Vidant Health has achieved Meaningful Use Stage 1 recognition and is also approaching Stage 7 for HIMSS Analytics’ Electronic Medical Records Adoption Model (EMRAM) recognition.


This is a critical leadership position within the office of Chief Medical Information Officer at Vidant Health, which requires the integration of nursing science, informatics and leadership skills to manage information systems for delivery of care consistent with the mission, vision and values of Vidant Health. This position reports to the Chief Medical Information Officer and works closely with nursing leadership.

  • Collaborate with Health Informatics colleagues to lead or support the strategic initiatives of Vidant Health. Assist team in change management, innovation, strategic planning and provide recommendations for future direction of health informatics. Lead and/or advise in operational committees representing clinical user groups including governance committees and advisory councils.
  • Identify and collaborate with clinical and operations owners for projects. Act as a consultant and clinical information systems expert between hospital departments, physicians, outside vendors, and other customers regarding computer system development, implementation, issues, and recommendations.
  • Work with IS, business and clinical leaders to translate health system strategies into tactical informatics implementation plans, such as the development and/or revision of initiatives or programs related to data collection, retrieval, analysis and interpretation to assist in optimizing patient outcomes and/or effectiveness and efficiency (through the use of clinical decision support tools where appropriate). Prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations and/or conclusions.
  • Collaborate with nursing and quality leaders. Participate as a content expert for the framework that surrounds the nursing processes for assessment, diagnosis, patient and family education, identification of outcomes, planning, implementation and evaluation. Utilize the knowledge and skills of clinical practice to determine the appropriate informatics workflow for clinical functions or processes when appropriate, ensuring consistency with professional standards of practice.
  • Evaluate workflows and recommend reengineering of processes around utilization of computerized applications to improve the workflow of patient care and to maximize departmental and organizational efficiency and effectiveness. Ensure process design is an integral part of technology design and implementation by identifying critical success factors, resource requirements, prerequisites, optimal processes, and recommended system configurations.
  • Foster relationships with management and other departments (such as Quality, Case Management, Revenue Cycle and Finance) to ensure efficient, effective communication and work to meet financial requirements. Assist with the assurance that the end users uphold the Vidant Health security policies.
  • In collaboration with operations and medical staff leaders, identify essential education and competency needs in the use of electronic tools for patient care. Assure the development of an appropriate education and competency validation plan. Provide ongoing end user clinical system education and support, with upgrades, new releases, and enhanced functionality.
  • Create, lead and support robust informatics program within the organization. Plan and execute programs and activities that contribute to individual and group staff development and capacity building.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of applicable federal, state, local, and private laws and regulations in relation to clinical documentation and electronic medical records.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master's degree in Nursing or related field (nursing informatics, information management or nursing administration) is required.
  • Current Registered Nurse license is required.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of inpatient clinical nursing experience required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years experience in clinical informatics.
  • Minimum of two (2) years experience in a senior leadership role within a health care organization.
  • Additional formal training in informatics preferred.
