Responsibilities

  • Day to Day Operations:
  • Develop and implement an integrated strategic communications plan to advance the Vidant Health brand; broaden awareness of its programs and priorities; and increase the visibility of its key product lines, facilities and leadership across key stakeholder audiences.
  • Proactively develop and implement public relations strategies that will allow leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences, including the media and key influencers.
  • Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the organization. Work with leadership team and staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them.
  • Serve as communications counselor to leadership.
  • Serve as a spokesperson and lead point person on media interactions that help promote and/or impact the organization.
  • Works in tandem with the Digital Director, Provider Relations Director and Marketing Director to deliver coordinated strategic messages to target audiences.
  • Actively engage, cultivate, and manage press relationships to ensure coverage surrounding the health system's programs, special events, public announcements, and other projects.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the business of Vidant Health, keeping abreast of emerging trends in the healthcare industry, political, and social environments; continuously evaluating these impacts and recommend changes to strategy as needed.
  •  Administrative Functions:
  • Oversee development of print communications including the annual report, collateral materials and electronic communications including online and social media.
  • Exercise judgment to prioritize media opportunities, and prepare talking points, speeches, presentations and other supporting material as needed.
  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the communications function including budgeting, planning and staff development.
  • Develop and manage annual budget.
  • Manage relationships with associated vendors. 
  • Management Accountabilities:
  • Ensures recruitment, orientation, development, evaluation and retention of highly capable staff.
  • Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.
  • Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach on a consistent basis.
  • Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities, conduct annula performance appraisals, and administer salary adjustments.  

Minimum Requirements

  • Four year college degree - BS in Communication, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Five years experience - Increasing responsibility as a Communications leader in a corporate environment, with healthcare communication or public relations a plus. Previous supervisory experience required.
