Position Summary

The Clinic Director of Physics is primarily engaged in ensuring high standards in the planning/optimization, delivery and evaluation of radiation therapy, and in this capacity is responsible for ensuring the accurate and consistent performance of radiological equipment and for verifying the accuracy and adequacy of treatment plans and dose calculations.

The Clinical Director of Physics ensures that all radiation oncology treatment and simulation machines, and all sealed brachytherapy sources, are correctly calibrated according to accepted protocols. Implements a comprehensive program for quality control of the radiation-producing equipment to assure their constant acceptable performance, for patient safety and treatment efficacy.

The Clinical Director of Physics assists in the implementation and quality assurance of the planning and delivery of radiotherapy, including technical specifications and or tolerances as well as the flow of procedures entailed in the process, including the supervision and QC review of treatment plans and dose calculations.

In addition to the above position summary, the clinical director of physics also:

  • Ensures the clinical workflow is safe, smooth, efficient and clear to all staff and physics.
  • Defines clear policies and procedures for each group in terms of treatment planning, CT simulation, and patient treatment (in conjunction with Lead Therapists).
  • Communicates with individuals and be a source for finding clinical solutions/workflow/challenges.
  • Manage day to day clinical physics issues: Linear accelerator troubleshooting, CT scanner, and simulation issues, dosimetry issues and be active in problem solving.
  • Cross train staff physicists to be competent and efficient in performing clinical physics needs for each given modality.
  • Attend training for various technology or assign staff physicists to attend vendor based training and disseminate information back to staff and clinic administrator.
  • Report to the Chief of Physics and works with Chief informing of workflow issues, and staff related issues that should be relayed to management.
  • Works in clinical role, coverage and schedule coverage for staff physicists.
  • Assists in radiation safety audits with RSO and involved in rad safety meetings. Ensures office of radiation safety is involved and policies are followed.
  • Provide requisite credentialing support for external protocols such as RTOG.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must possess a Master's Degree in Physics or closely related field.
  • Must be registered as an Authorized Medical Physicist on State Licenses granted to facilities in designated area of responsibility.
  • Requires at least 3 years of full-time experience as a radiation oncology medical physicist.  Experience with linac calibrations and QC, treatment planning system QC and routine use, radiation safety, IMRT planning and delivery, computer systems quality control and medical physics program documentation is preferred.
