Information Services at Vidant Health

Vidant Health offers comprehensive Information Technology (IT) services and infrastructure to support and enable all aspects of organizational operations. Our IT division consists of a state-of-the-art data center located in Greenville, NC. The data center services all information technology needs of Vidant Health facilities. Vidant Health has been recognized as one of the 100 Most Wired healthcare organizations by Hospitals and Health Networks magazine. All Vidant Health owned or leased hospitals are on a common IT platform, including our electronic health record (EHR) that uses Epic's suite of applications. Vidant Health has achieved Meaningful Use Stage 1 recognition and is also approaching Stage 7 for HIMSS Analytics’ Electronic Medical Records Adoption Model (EMRAM) recognition. 

Responsibilities

This is a critical leadership position within the office of Chief Medical Information Officer at Vidant Health, responsible for developing and executing the strategy for EHR and clinical applications training, at-the-elbow support, and optimization in the ambulatory setting, consistent with the mission, vision and values of Vidant Health. This position reports to the Chief Medical Information Officer and works closely with VMG and IS leadership.

  • Provides the vision, leadership, and day-to-day management for the Ambulatory Health Informatics team to support ambulatory operational priorities and strong EHR adoption. Develops and executes the training and support value proposition and framework to support clinicians in their day-to-day use of the EHR and clinical applications in the ambulatory setting.
  • Serves as the leader/central point of contact and accountability for coordinating day-to-day health informatics training and at-the-elbow support activities across the ambulatory setting; incorporates standardization within the system to help ensure successful outcomes are met; manages key risks, issues, and escalations.
  • Works closely with the VMG Vice President Operations, the CMIO, and the VP Ambulatory Applications to participate in the development/update of the Clinical Information System Strategic Planning process to ensure ambulatory alignment with the overall health system strategic plan.
  • Leads the ambulatory health informatics team in the development of specifications that support the design and successful adoption of clinical systems within the ambulatory setting; Provides leadership and recommendations to support decisions for new clinical systems and technology programs that meet organizational standards and requirements (e.g. ICD-10, order set standardization, population health).
  • Leads and coordinates clinical process automation and optimization in collaboration with the VMG Vice President Operations, the CMIO, and the Quality Department that supports analytics and clinical decision-making. Works closely with VMG leadership to develop and/or revise policies and procedures, as applicable.
  • Works closely with multidisciplinary key stakeholders to ensure the EHR optimizes clinical workflows, improves safety and outcomes, and conforms to Meaningful Use requirements in the ambulatory setting. Monitors and reports system adoption to governance groups and other committees.
  • Collaborates across departments and serves as the ambulatory informatics expert for the organization. Stays abreast of current ambulatory informatics and information technology trends in the industry, and brings forth for leadership consideration emerging technologies and improvements based on best practices. Evaluates the impact of information technology on ambulatory processes and identifies areas to promote the use of technology in creating efficiencies for clinicians and improving the quality of care and revenue compliance.
  • Forms strategic relationships with clinical and standards organizations as well as EHR vendor(s), which enables monitoring and tracking of best practices, integration of evidence-based care, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Accountable for planning, budgeting, and fiscal management of ambulatory informatics operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Four year degree and a Master’s degree in Information Services, Informatics, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, Public Administration, or a related IS or healthcare field.
  • Clinical degree (e.g. RN) or Informatics certification (e.g. CPHIMS, ANCC, etc.) desirable but not required.
  • 3 years to 5 years significant experience in an ambulatory setting in a leadership role required (minimum 5 years as manager or director); experience as practice manager desirable.
  • Significant experience developing and leading EHR training and support initiatives in the ambulatory setting required.
  • Ambulatory EHR experience required; Epic Ambulatory experience highly desirable.
  • Solid understanding of ambulatory clinical, business, and financial workflows with demonstrated experience in leading the integration of technology and ambulatory workflows.
  • Demonstrated management and leadership experience in a matrix organization.
  •  Experience leading successful EHR optimization programs in an ambulatory setting required (LEAN/Six Sigma experience desirable).
