  • Develop, coordinate, implement and evaluate an organized program for the delivery of Decedent Care services reflecting the patient and family end-of-life needs.
  • Work collaboratively with family members, physicians, hospital staff, funeral homes, morgue, transport, medical examiners, Risk Management, Carolina Donor Services, Miracles in Sight and governmental agencies (county and state) using a "customer service" framework to facilitate the Decedent Care process.
  • Develop, implement and participate in the orientation and training of staff and volunteers. Co-ordinate the work of staff for 24/7 Decedent Care coverage
  • Work with Pastoral Care Chaplains to ensure the family receives necessary bereavement support.
  • Daily monitoring of Decedent Care activities for compliance to protocol and provide feedback to Decedent Care staff.
  • Work with funeral homes, physicians and house staff to address incomplete or inaccurate death certificates.
  • Maintain watch on 10-day limit and refer to Risk Management as per protocol.
  • Knowledge of Vidant Medical Center autopsy procedures and ability to talk to family to explain variations available when necessary.
  • Provide feedback to Administrator of Nursing Support Services of potentially complicated Decedent Care events and involve Risk Management as per protocol
  • Plan and develop educational programs and support groups related to Decedent Care and bereavement.
  • Plan for development, expansion and refinement of Decedent Care process for continual quality improvement.
  • Prepare reports to Vidant Medical Center Administration and County Health Department.

Minimum Requirements

  • BSW or similar related college education
  • Two years of healthcare related experience
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and basic computer skills are required. 
  • Intermediate MS Word and Excel skills required.
  • Ability to problem solve, make decisions, set priorities and keep accurate, timely and orderly records
  • Act as team player exhibiting flexibility, self-motivation, dependability, and the ability to work well with others

  • As needed, hours may vary to include days, nights and weekends.
