Vidant Medical Center is a fully accredited, 900+ bed regional referral facility encompassing a Level-1 Trauma Center and extensive inpatient and outpatient services including intensive and intermediate care, pediatrics, bariatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, pain management and psychiatry.

Responsibilities

  •  Provides consultation and assessment of referred patients. May arrive at a working formulation of the patient's personality and behavioral functioning (coping styles, interaction styles, cognitive /intellectual abilities, motivational level, legal competency, etc.) based on data obtained from clinical interviews, review of the patient's history, behavioral observation and psychometric evaluation (familiar with administration, scoring and interpretation of a wide range of standardized psychological tests).
  •  Helps determine the proper diagnosis of the patient; determines what treatment approach might be most effective (how to maximize compliance and motivation and in improving staff-patient rapport); utilizes this data in the planning of a treatment intervention.
  • Applies various psychological principles in the treatment of psychiatric and behavioral disorders; including psychotherapies (may be individual and/or group and counseling; focuses the treatment on alleviating various types of psychological distress, physical distress and in maximizing the effectiveness of a patient's treatment.
  • Serves as a consultant and teacher to physicians, hospital personnel, patients, families and other agencies; instructs others in patient care positions on techniques they might use to assist a patient's behavior such that optimum benefit might result from treatment; conveys to other staff the basic personality and coping style of a patient is establishing a good working rapport and in capitalizing on a patient's strengths.
  • May participate/conduct in-service programs to help staff better understand psychological reactions. May direct lectures and group discussions regarding various psychological subjects for nursing staff, medical students, students from other allied health fields as well as to patients and their families.
  • May consult as needed to other social/psychological agencies (ex: other hospitals, community behavioral health providers, medical staff outside VMC, disability agencies, schools, courts, etc.) regarding patients who have been served by the Department of Psychology during their hospitalization; may provide education (such as workshops, trainings) to community agencies and the general community.
  • Facilitates referrals of patients to community behavioral health providers or other appropriate agencies for patients who require continued psychological care following discharge.
  • Maintains reports on psychological consultation and assessments and documents in the Electronic Health Record, as applicable; submits accurate charges in a timely manner for services rendered.
  • Attends departmental meetings; participates in the development of policies and procedures; is responsible for keeping abreast of new research findings and assessment and treatment methods in pertinent areas.
  • Performs other related work as directed by the supervisor and/or Chief of Service for Department of Psychiatric Medicine. 

Minimum Requirements

  • PhD or Psy.D in Clinical Psychology is required.
  • Must be a Board applicant or Board certified.
  • Licensed Psychologist in NC (or immediately eligible) ; Must be trained in psychological testing for adults. Prefer training in child psychology as well.
