The Leo W. Jenkins Cancer Center provides outpatient cancer treatment services on the medical campus of Vidant Medical Center and the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. Cancer experts here diagnose and treat thousands of cancer patients every year.


  • The Clinical Nurse Specialist is a registered nurse that is masters prepared in Nursing and demonstrates expertise in a specific clinical area or for a specific patient population.
  • The Clinical Nurse Specialist:
    • strives to meet the needs of patient, family, health care system and the larger society through coordinated efforts with interdisciplinary providers.
    • functions as a leader, innovator and change agent in application of evidenced based practice and quality patient care.
    • provides advanced clinical care and leadership for a selected patient population and/or for a specific clinical area along the continuum of care.
    • works with the interdisciplinary team in assessing needs, implementing strategies and evaluating outcomes.
    • contributes to the development, maintenance and change of the health care delivery system.
    • provides consultation and educational services in area of specialty to health care providers, patient and/or significant others.
    • fosters communication and teamwork.
    • leads in stimulating research growth and utilization of evidenced base practice.
    • makes a contribution to advancing the science of nursing practice through research, education, publications and presentations.

Minimum Position Requirements

  • BSN and Masters Degree in Nursing required.
  • North Carolina RN licensure and Specialty Certification required.
  • More than 5 years but less than 6 years experience as a Staff Nurse, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Manager, Assistant Nurse Manager needed.
