The Clinical Nurse Specialist is a registered nurse that is masters prepared in Nursing and demonstrates expertise in a specific clinical area or for a specific patient population. The Clinical Nurse Specialist strives to meet the needs of patient, family, health care system and the larger society through coordinated efforts with interdisciplinary providers.  The clinical nurse specialist functions as a leader, innovator and change agent in application of evidenced based practice and quality patient care.  The clinical nurse specialist provides advanced clinical care and leadership for a selected patient population and/or for a specific clinical area along the continuum of care.  The clinical nurse specialist works with the interdisciplinary team in assessing needs, implementing strategies and evaluating outcomes.  The clinical nurse specialist contributes to the development, maintenance and change of the health care delivery system.  The clinical nurse specialist provides consultation and educational services in area of specialty to health care providers, patient and/or significant others.  The clinical nurse specialist fosters communication and teamwork.  The clinical nurse specialist leads in stimulating research growth and utilization of evidenced base practice.  The clinical nurse specialist makes a contribution to advancing the science of nursing practice through research, education, publications and presentations

  • Promotes quality patient care across the continuum by:  Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates specialty population needs through communication with health team members.
  • Applies assessment, research and theory to design and implement nursing interventions that integrate with medical treatments to provide highest quality individual and population based care.
  • Effectively utilizes system informatics in a multidisciplinary role in designing and implementing alternative strategies for patient care.
  • Utilizes the informatics process to reflect quality and safe patient care.
  • Models leadership in clinical care delivery to front line staff at the bedside.
  • Implements teaching/learning theories and principles to foster educational development of patients, families and staff.
  • Independently identifies disease process and health maintenance educational needs of patients and families throughout the continuum of care.
  • Plans and coordinates education of individuals or groups of patients
  • Develops and presents educational programs and conferences

  • May practice as adjunct faculty.
  • Provides health care consultation using communication and change theories.
  • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary health care team in planning individual and population-based interventions.

  • Assesses, develops and implements policies and procedures which are related to area of specialization.

  • Acts as a resource within the health care system for complex patient issues.
  • Identifies and implements research methods to support quality care, patient safety and evidenced based practice.

  • Evaluates the impact of programs and interventions on clinical outcomes and clinical practice.
  • Synthesizes and interprets statistics using critical thinking for applicability to clinical setting.

Minimum Requirements

  • MSN in nursing with the Clinical Nurse Specialist concentration is required. The clinical Nurse Specialist concentration may be substituted for an alternate Master of Science in Nursing when accompanied by Clinical Nurse Specialist title recognition by the NC Board of Nursing.

  • Specialty certification that requires a master's degree is required, clinical nurse specialist certification is preferred however other master's required specialty certifications relevant to the CNS role or area of specialty may be substituted.

  • More than 5 years but less than 6 years experience as a Staff Nurse, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Manager, Assistant Nurse Manager needed.
