We opened in March 2002 as a joint venture between Vidant Health and Chesapeake Regional Healthcare. Our facility includes eighteen acute care medical-surgical beds, two labor and delivery/recovery/post-partum beds, a level II nursery bed, a designated caesarian section room, three operating rooms, outpatient and diagnostic services along with a 24-hour emergency department. Affiliated with The Outer Banks Hospital is The Outer Banks Medical Group (a Vidant Medical Group partner) which is comprised of eight physician practices.

As a community hospital, we offer a broad range of inpatient and outpatient services. We meet the health care needs of our coastal community, whose year-round population of 35,000 swells to 250,000 in the summer months.

Position Summary

The Clinical Informaticist is responsible for understanding clinical requirements in a healthcare setting and translating those requirements into formal specifications for clinical technology products and services. This includes leveraging and optimizing clinical systems to support standardized workflows and processes. The Clinical Informaticist also is responsible for supporting and training end users on clinical systems functionality and workflows, ensuring optimal use of clinical technology to achieve system wide strategic priorities. The Clinical Informaticist utilizes process improvement and change management skills to promote improved quality and process efficiencies through technology. The Clinical Informaticist also works closely with Information Services, Vidant operations leadership, and Quality to achieve key responsibilities.


  • Executes specifications that support the design and successful adoption of clinical systems across the organization.
  • Makes recommendations to support decisions for new clinical systems and technology programs that meet organizational standards and requirements (e.g. ICD-10, order set standardization, population health).
  • Identifies needs and requirements for clinical systems across the continuum of care. Integrates, Convenes, Coordinates and Communicates Works with multidisciplinary teams to optimize patient-centered clinical systems through standardized education and training using Lean Process Improvement methodology, change management, and end user support to promote improved quality and process efficiencies through technology.
  • Assists with the development and deployment of the health informatics communication strategy and plan. Stays abreast of new regulatory requirements and facilitates adoption and compliance of capturing regulatory requirements in the electronic health record (EHR). Able to support end users across the continuum of care (may be cross trained to support both ambulatory and inpatient clinical applications).
  • Assists with deployment of clinical system implementations via Vidant Health project implementation methodology. Manages, localizes, and monitors standardized workflows and business processes to ensure adoption and optimization of new or modified clinical information systems.
  • Routinely rounds on clinical units; validates and proactively analyzes and optimizes workflows to support end users.
  • Reports hardware/software and security access issues to the service desk and assists end users with resolution; proactively monitors service desk issues to support timely resolution of issues and closing the communication loop with end users.

Minimum Requirements

Associates degree in clinical discipline required; Masters Degree in informatics in lieu of clinical degree 2 years experience using an EHR in a clinical setting preferred Operational knowledge of healthcare including a demonstrated understanding of workflow processes in a clinical setting required Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite Ability to communicate clinical concepts to technical teams Ability to work in a dynamically changing environment with competing priorities Excellent written and verbal communication skills Obtains and/or maintains current proficiency from the vendor and continued education/learning to understand the functionality of the electronic health record.
