 Information Services at Vidant Health

Vidant Health offers comprehensive Information Technology (IT) services and infrastructure to support and enable all aspects of organizational operations. Our IT division consists of a state-of-the-art data center located in Greenville, NC. The data center services all information technology needs of Vidant Health facilities. All Vidant Health owned or leased hospitals are on a common IT platform, including our electronic health record (EHR) that uses Epic's suite of applications. Vidant Health has achieved Meaningful Use Stage 2 recognition and is also approaching Stage 7 for HIMSS Analytics’ Electronic Medical Records Adoption Model (EMRAM) recognition.

Position Summary

The Clinical Informaticist is responsible for understanding clinical requirements in a healthcare setting and translating those requirements into formal specifications for clinical technology products and services. This includes leveraging and optimizing clinical systems to support standardized workflows and processes. The Clinical Informaticist also is responsible for supporting and training end users on clinical systems functionality and workflows, ensuring optimal use of clinical technology to achieve system wide strategic priorities. The Clinical Informaticist utilizes process improvement and change management skills to promote improved quality and process efficiencies through technology. The Clinical Informaticist also works closely with Information Services, Vidant operations leadership, and Quality to achieve key responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Executes specifications that support the design and successful adoption of clinical systems across the organization.

  • Makes recommendations to support decisions for new clinical systems and technology programs that meet organizational standards and requirements (e.g. ICD-10, order set standardization, population health).

  • Identifies needs and requirements for clinical systems across the continuum of care.

  • Integrates, Convenes, Coordinates and Communicates

  • Works with multidisciplinary teams to optimize patient-centered clinical systems through standardized education and training using Lean Process Improvement methodology, change management, and end user support to promote improved quality and process efficiencies through technology. Assists with the development and deployment of the health informatics communication strategy and plan. Stays abreast of new regulatory requirements and facilitates adoption and compliance of capturing regulatory requirements in the electronic health record (EHR).

  • Able to support end users across the continuum of care (may be cross trained to support both ambulatory and inpatient clinical applications).

  • Assists with deployment of clinical system implementations via Vidant Health project implementation methodology.

  • Manages, localizes, and monitors standardized workflows and business processes to ensure adoption and optimization of new or modified clinical information systems.

  • Routinely rounds on clinical units; validates and proactively analyzes and optimizes workflows to support end users.

  • Reports hardware/software and security access issues to the service desk and assists end users with resolution; proactively monitors service desk issues to support timely resolution of issues and closing the communication loop with end users.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in clinical discipline required

  • 3 to 5 years clinical informatics or clinical IS experience required

  • In lieu of clinical degree, bachelor’s degree in related field combined with 3 to 5 years similar clinical informatics or clinical IS experience required

  • Informatics certification preferred (ANCC, CPHIMS, CAHIMS)

  • Six Sigma LEAN training preferred

  • Epic build and training certification preferred

  • Clinical licensure as a healthcare professional preferred

  • 3 years’ experience using an EHR in a clinical setting required

  • Operational knowledge of healthcare including a demonstrated understanding of workflow processes in a clinical setting required

  • Demonstrated proficiency of the Microsoft Office suite required

  • Experience as an EHR super user preferred

  • Ability to communicate clinical concepts to technical teams and system design concepts to clinical end users

  • Ability to work in a dynamically changing environment with competing priorities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
