Vidant Medical Center is a fully accredited, 900+ bed regional referral facility encompassing a Level-1 Trauma Center and extensive inpatient and outpatient services including intensive and intermediate care, pediatrics, bariatrics, obstetrics, and gynecology, surgery, pain management and psychiatry.

Department Highlights

CVP rehab provides outpatient services to patients with various diagnoses ranging from a recent myocardial infarction, those that are s/p CABG as well as multiple pulmonary diagnoses (COPD, sarcoidosis, bronchiectasis, etc). CVP rehab patients’ ages range from young adult to geriatric.  We also provide discharge education to the patients and families who are in the hospital following bypass surgery and valve replacement/repair.

Patients enrolled in the program receive services three days per week (Mondays,Tuesdays and Thursdays) with a focus on disease specific education and monitored exercise programming.  As much as possible the family and/or care giver is involved in the educational portion on the program.  New patient assessments and Phase IV maintenance programming takes place on Wednesdays and Fridays.  New patient assessments are a multidisciplinary process that involves an RN, RCP and EP.  This multidisciplinary approach is carried through the full rehab experience and helps create a comprehensive, individualized plan of care.  On average patients attend 24 sessions but can receive up to 36 sessions

 We are looking for a Clinical Exercise Assistant


  • Delivers direct quality patient care utilizing clinical skill and knowledge. Assist exercise physiologist, plan, implement and supervise to exercise prescription and progression for patients with cardiovascular and pulmonary disease. Monitors and communicates changes in patient's condition or response to exercise therapy and documents in medical record.
  • Implements, monitors and documents exercise prescription and progression of exercise prescription under the supervisor of an Exercise Physiologist with an Exercise Specialist certification. Assesses patients for appropriateness for exercise, potential problems or limitations that impact exercise. Utilizes clinical judgment to provide a range of options for assisting cardiovascular and pulmonary outpatients to embrace safe exercise as a therapy for risk factor management. Uses a multidisciplinary approach and includes patient and family in implementing, encouraging, motivation and monitoring exercise therapies.
  • Assists in the coordination for orientation of patients to the outpatient setting, equipment, safety standards and educates the patients regarding their responsibility in the process.
  • Conducts outpatient cardiovascular and pulmonary therapy sessions. Assures appropriate safe setting for the conduct of exercise therapy sessions. Leads exercise therapy session to include appropriate components of warm up, conditioning phase and cool down. Monitors patients for signs of exercise intolerance using ECG, symptom history, vital signs, pulse oximetry, level of dyspnea and rating of perceived exertion to adjust patient's prescription as neededunder the supervision of an exercise physiologist with an exercise specialist certification.
  • Develops leadership role. Assumes responsibility of continued professional growth and development.  Assists in facilitating needed changes in policies, procedures and protocols. Reports changing patient status and program staffing needs to appropriate personnel.

  Minimum Requirements

  • 4 yr College Degree in Exercise Science is required.
  • Less than 1 year experience in cardiovascular and/or pulmonary rehabilitation.
  • 3 month internship may substitute for the required experience.
