The James and Connie Maynard Children's Hospital at Vidant Medical Center offers 197 beds and bassinets and an array of specialized services unequaled in eastern North Carolina. Our patient-and-family-centered care philosophy is more than a mantra; it's the guiding force of our efforts and has been for nearly 30 years. Responsibilities

  • Ability to Utilizes stress reduction techniques to facilitate positive coping, Provides preparation and education to patient when transferring units or upon admission, Ability to assist patients and families in coping with stress of hospitalization, illness, death and loss and able to Communicate an understanding of procedure/surgery, Meets psychosocial needs of patient, family and staff by working effectively with those of all educational, racial, religious, economic and cultural backgrounds, and Idenfies appropriate resources based on child's needs and developmental level.
  • Individual Support Skills are demonstrated through the Provision of developmentally appropriate activities an support on an individual basis as needed, Assessment of child and family to identify psychosocial and developmental needs of the hospitalized child, Identification of benefits of therapeutic materials, Development of individual treatment plans based on an assessment of the child's development, temperament, coping style, medical play, and available social supports.
  • Identification of developmentally appropriate methods in preparing children and families for diagnostic and treatment procedures, i.e. pre-operative tours while able to Interpret the child's perception of his diagnosis and treatment as revealed through play and other means of communication both verbal and non-verbal.
  • Family Support Skills are demonstrated through Respecting family caregivers while offering emotional support and education, Supporting family bonds and utilizes family strengths in the care of the child, Offering information and assistance specific to the impact of health care experience, Assisting family members in dealing with hopsital experience through provision of emotional support and education, i.e. medical play, parent education and individual support, Advocating for patient/family re: hospitalization, and Assesssing family coping mechanisms and support systems without bias.
  • Supervision and coordination of group sessions. Provides opportunities for and facilitates a variety of play and activity forms that promote self-healing, self-expression, understanding, and mastery, Provides a safe, clean and organized environment appropriate for age and development of patient by maintaining appropriate adult to child ratio, Maintains total room awareness, anticipates safety hazards and acts in a preventive manner, Assists in maintenance and monitoring of materials and supplies used by pediatric patients, and Provides opportunities and programs to ensure continuity in the child's normal life experience, i.e. special events, special visitors, holidays.
  • Consultation and education - Provides consultation and education to the health care team, including parents, regarding the developmental status and individuals needs of children to promote adaptation to treatment, Provides parent education on child development and potential effects of hospitalization, Provides interdisciplinary inservices and student teaching utilizing theories based on child development and the impact of illness, injury and hospitalization on children and families, Provides consultation on the impact of environmental factos on the child's adaptation to hospital and treatment, Provides child health care education, Provides orientation to health care experiences and personnel, Involvement in community outreach programs sharing information about children, i.e. health care experience, safety and appropriate child development, and Provides training to others with close supervision, Provides culturally appropriate materials, Provides education and support to children, families and staff on referral basis, and Pursue educational opportunities to enhance professional growth and clinical expertise.

Minimum Requirements

  • Four year degree: BS/BA in Child Development, Child Life or related field required.
  • Child Development / Child Life or related field. Child Life internship, course work related to development of children and effects of hospitalization, preparation and coping techniques for hospitalized children and bereavement education, continuing education is required.
  • Child Life Certification required.
  • Must maintain a valid North Carolina drivers license or be licensed in the state that one resides and maintain the VMC required minimum insurance limits.
  • One year or less experience as a Volunteer, practium work, internship attendance a related conferences, workshops, seminars. i.e. Child Life Council, graduate assistanship, and then entry level Child Life therapists.
