Position Summary

SICU provides support for the critically ill surgical and or trauma patient. This ICU is a crucial part of our Level One Trauma Center. SICU is a closed ICU, where all admissions require consult of the Trauma Critical Care Attending. The critically ill trauma patient includes approximately 75 percent of the patients admitted to the SICU. Patients in this setting require frequent assessments of all body systems and collaborative evaluations to manage patient care. Common diagnoses include, but are not limited to, severe sepsis, multi system trauma injuries, organ transplant, respiratory failure, acute renal failure, and multisystem organ failure. Continuity of care is facilitated through transition to our surgical intermediate unit. The population within SICU will include but is not limited to

  • Critically ill and injured multi-system trauma (including neuro trauma)

  • Additional patient populations admitted to the SICU for critical care and monitoring include: Surgical oncology, general surgery, orthopedic surgery, OB-GYN, renal and pancreas transplant recipients, and organ donor patients including brain death donation and donation after cardiac death.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.

  • Active NAI listing with the North Carolina Division of Facility Services

  • Active NAII listing with North Carolina Board of Nursing

  • BLS is required.

  • Current CPR - BLS Healthcare Provider certification is required through American Heart Association.
