Position Summary

Under minimal supervision, the Cancer Center Financial Coordinator provides counseling and advocacy for uninsured, underinsured, and private pay patients.?? Ensures patients are educated on their financial obligations and provides resources and assistance to secure coverage; acts as a patient advocate to minimize the financial burden associated with cancer treatment.?? The Cancer Center Financial Coordinator mitigates the financial risk to the cancer center and hospital by performing accurate financial clearance review along with a comprehensive analysis of patient and payor specific benefits and patient liability.?? Coordination and communication with the patient and clinical teams including physicians, nurses, social workers, and navigators is key for the successful financial analysis and clearance


  • Performs financial screening and interviews patients.
  • Meets with patients prior to beginning of treatment to educate patients on insurance benefits and make them aware of treatment cost, out-of-pocket expense, and cancer center's payment policies.
  • Collects information from patients to verify payer source; researches and verifies insurance coverage for hospital, professional, and pharmacy coverage (comprehensive benefits examination).
  • Provides updated financial and demographic data on all patients in EHR.
  • Prepares financial packets based on each individual patient's benefits, patient financial interview, and calculated estimate of expenses based on patient benefis.
  • Assists in the development of guidelines used to complete the financial clearance process.
  • Evaluates patient requests for financial assistance.
  • Under direction of the Business Manager, works with VMC Finance, Vidant Medical Group, and pharmacy assistance programs to assist self-funded patients and those with limited benefits in the application of grants and charity assistance.
  • Identifies patients for eligibility for Komen grant; maintains database of eligible patients and tracks disbursements.
  • Helps patients complete Medicaid and disability applications and other assistance programs.
  • Assists patients in obtaining other resources if eligibility has been terminated to reduce cancer center's write-offs and bad debt.
  • Monitors pending financial assistance applications until they are approved.
  • Tracks financial assistance and obtains additional funding if necessary once assistance has expired.

Minimum Requirements

Associate college degree in with concentration in Health Occupations, Business, Social Work or related degree.

1 to 3 years experience in a doctor's office or hospital

Bachelor's degree with concentration in Health Occupations, Business, Social Work or related degree can be substituted for experience
