Business Manager for Medicine Division

Position Summary

The primary role of the business manager is to support the quantitative, strategic, and non-clinical business needs of the service line. The role exists to improve financial performance of the service line by enhancing the administrative attention to detail in the areas of financial analysis and forecasting, productivity management, expense management, contract management, and other special projects. 


1. Provides financial performance support for Medicine Service Line by utilizing expertise in quantitative analysis to assist clinical administrators/managers with efficient service line management and business planning needs.

  • Review productivity, time/attendance management, and staffing reports for cost avoidance.
  • Monitor overtime/incentive and track opportunity to improvement.
  • Assist the administrative team with data analysis that result in cost avoidance and revenue enhancement.
  • Assist in the development of business plans for new services and procedures.

2. Determine the etiology of variances from projected outcomes.

  • Determine cost avoidance measures and assist the administrators/managers in tracking incremental improvement.
  • Assist with revisions to revenue forecasts.
  • Monitor charge entry accuracy and define opportunity to maximize profit.

3. Assist administrators/managers with budget preparation.

  • Maintain volume reports throughout the year to assist with the volume projections for subsequent budget.
  • Function as a liaison with financial departments to monitor and project financial impact to budget of strategic business changes.

4. Facilitate contract process and renewals.

  • Evaluate financial impact of the contract proposal during the development phase of negotiations.
  • Monitor the sum set and renewal dates to ensure efficient negotiations in a timely manner.
  • Work with vendors as appropriate to negotiate purchase pricing consistent with national benchmarks and VMC strategic goals.

5. Manage purchase requisition process within the service line.

  • Review all purchase orders and reconcile to budget parameters to ensure cost avoidance and non-budgeted expenses.
  • Assist with timely processing of purchase requisitions.

6. Manage the medicine barometer. Day to day input, analysis.

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum requirements include 4 year degree in any field.
  • One to three years experience in financial or statistical field gained in healthcare or other productivity based organization.
  • Advanced degree in business management may be substituted for experience. 

Preferred Requirements

  • Master's degree in business, healthcare administration or related field. 
  • Proficient in Excel/Access or other related quantitative tools.
  • Proficiency in financial or managerial accounting.
  • Experience with development of business pro-forma and financial forecasting.
  • Experience with contract negotiations.
