Vidant Health offers comprehensive Information Technology (IT) services and infrastructure to support and enable all aspects of organizational operations. Our IT division consists of a state-of-the-art data center located in Greenville, NC. The data center services all information technology needs of Vidant Health facilities. All Vidant Health owned or leased hospitals are on a common IT platform, including our electronic health record (EHR) that uses Epic's suite of applications. Vidant Health has achieved Meaningful Use Stage 2 recognition and is also approaching Stage 7 for HIMSS Analytics’ Electronic Medical Records Adoption Model (EMRAM) recognition.

Position Summary

Performs a variety of database related tasks, troubleshoots the most difficult database problems, recognized expert and go-to person. Have a strong understanding of database administrations, principles, and practices.

Possesses in-depth technical knowledge of network, storage, and platform operating systems (AIX, Linux, and Windows). The Senior DBA will resolve complicated database performance and capacity issues, replication and other distributed data issues.

Provides guidance to team members in best architectural practices in maximizing the database performance.

Develop and deliver long-term strategic goals for data eco-system vision and standards in conjunction with team members, department managers, and other key stakeholders.

Create strategies and plans for data security, backup, disaster recovery, business continuity, and archiving. Document the data architecture and environment in order to maintain a current and accurate view of the larger data picture.

Oversees regular and emergency database maintenance to keep information current.

Analyzing performance and usage trends and makes recommendations for improvement.

Leads highly complex Database Administration projects and efforts.

Identifies and defines standard procedures and processes, ensuring compatibility with vision and direction.

Assist developers in performance and tuning of T-SQL and PLSQL statements

Prepares technical documentation for database platform, service or infrastructure technical components.

Plan and implement capacity and resource expansion to ensure data eco-system scalability.

Responsible for data eco-system monitoring including system space and resource utilization, security monitoring, performance tuning, and implement efficiency improvements.

Install, upgrade, and support the various database application environments and associated 3rd party software products on AIX, Linux, Windows operating system environments.

Analyze user requirements and, based on findings, design functional specifications for client/server databases and database applications.

Plan and implement capacity and resource expansion to ensure scalability of company databases.

Design and deploy data table structures, forms, reports, and queries.

Conduct research and make recommendations on database products, services, protocols, and standards in support of procurement and development efforts.

Identify data entry, retrieval, change, and delete issues, and work to ensure a high level of data availability.

Perform cost estimates for data migration to new databases during upgrades, and plan and coordinate these migrations.

Evaluate and select database components, including hardware, relational database management systems, and database design solutions.

Mentor and/or provide leadership to junior members of the team.

This position is required to rotate on-call responsibilities.

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate degree or equivalent work training and experience required.
  • OCA, OCP, MCSE: Data Platform, MCDBA or Cache certification preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • 5+ years experience in a large, diverse database management environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of one or more of the following areas including 5 or more years of experience:  database security, backup and recovery principles and techniques, disaster recovery planning and testing, high availability, database performance tuning, capacity planning, resource utilization analysis, database software installation and patch management, database upgrades and data migrations, database design, ETL principles, and license management.
  • Provides team leadership in areas of expertise and key database initiatives.
  • Experience leading project teams to design, implement and oversee implementation of new solutions in areas of expertise.
  • Experience working in team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Independently motivated to seek knowledge in areas pertaining to their current position.
  • Self educates and seeks knowledge from mentors / management of VH Information Services, and other business leaders from VH.
