Vidant Medical Center is a fully accredited, 900+ bed regional referral facility encompassing a Level-1 Trauma Center and extensive inpatient and outpatient services including intensive and intermediate care, pediatrics, bariatrics, obstetrics, and gynecology, surgery, pain management and psychiatry.


  • The Outreach Triage staff member provides behavioral health and/or chemical dependency screenings in the Emergency Departments of contracted hospitals. The Outreach Triage staff member performs under the direction and supervision of the Attending Physician in the Emergency Department of contracted hospitals and within the framework of the philosophy and objectives of Patient Care Services and hospital policies.
  • Provides Age Specific Direct Patient Care According to Unit Scope of Service.
  • Collects and documents data about patients commonly seen in the Emergency Departments of contracted hospitals, for behavioral health crises.
  • Utilizes appropriate resources to screen patients with conditions that are new, unfamiliar, or not commonly seen.
  • Documents overt and covert signs and symptoms to assist in determining when patient is currently at physiological or psychological risk.
  • Psycho education is provided to the patient and family regarding behavioral health, crisis intervention, stress, available behavioral health services and any other identified education need. Assists with a plan of action based on a screening of existing and potential patient problems.
  • Assists ED physician in determining appropriate level of care utilizing human and material resources to meet bio-psychosocial and developmental needs.
  • Coordinates existing resources to meet individualized patient/significant other needs.
  • Assists with referrals to outpatient behavioral health treatment, inpatient behavioral health treatment, and detoxification placement.  Assists in the involuntary commitment process.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of Population-Specific interventions/actions and patient response in relation to intended outcome, recognizing pharmacological and physiologic variations.
  • Upon completion of the screening, possible solutions are presented to the emergency room physician. The emergency room physician makes the final disposition decision. Communicates disposition decision to patient and/or family.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must have a Master's Degree in a mental health field such as social work, rehabilitation studies, etc., with a clinical professional licensure such as LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor), LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker), etc. or RN licensure with psychiatric experience) at an ADN, BSN, or MSN level ..
  • A minimum of 2 years clinical assessment experience in either an inpatient behavioral health setting or an outpatient emergency services setting  needed for this current vacancy.
  • RNs with ADN level degree would need to enroll in BSN program within 2 years and graduate within 5 years.

Preferred Requirements

  • Experience with all age groups, experience with Mental Retardation, experience with Alcohol/Substance Abuse.

Other Information

  • This position would be a great job for licensed clinician working full time seeking supplemental income.  Position is part time / on call to serve Vidant-Edgecome Hospital, Vidant-Bertie Hospital, or Vidant-Chowan Hospital as needed.   Outreach staff are required to pickup at least 2 days of call per month.   There are two separate call schedules:  weeknights from 7pm - 7am (12 hrs) or weekends and holidays 7am - 7am (24 hrs).  Person being hired may choose primary call schedule but would need to be flexible to cover other call schedule if needed.
