Responsibilities

  • Must work efficiently and effectively with others, possessing tact, discretion, and diplomacy.

  • Must demonstrate creative, problem-solving approach to unit and staff problem.
  • Must understand Vidant Beaufort Hospital policies, procedures, and protocols and communicate, teach, and/or demonstrate to unit staff members as needed.
  • Be able to work in the unit and go to other floors as needed.
  • Be able to transport patients to other facilities via ambulance.
  • Be able to work under stressful conditions.
  • Be able to work under conditions such as high noise levels from machines.
  • Functions as a role model in his/her clinical specialty, demonstrating competency in clinical judgment, selected technical skills, and appropriate knowledge base.
  • Provides clinical direction to staff and evaluates the level of care provided by the unit nursing staff.
  • Demonstrates clinical expertise in the execution of the nursing process and directs staff in the application.
  • Demonstrates awareness of and adherence to safety and legal requirements established at the hospital and Department of Nursing levels with emphasis on those pertinent to his/her unit.
  • Assists Nurse Manager with budgetary planning and management for the Department of Nursing.
  • Serves on committees, task forces, and workgroups on a voluntary and appointed basis at the department and hospital level.
  • Attends meetings as required, participates actively and completes follow-up activities in a consistent manner.
  • Demonstrates awareness of hospital and departmental policies, participates in their development as appropriate, and uses these as a basis for decision making for both clinical and management issues.
  • Assists Nurse Manager with development of criteria-based job descriptions as directed and in the writing of performance standards for employees in his/her area.
  • Assists Nurse Manager with development of standards in his/her area directed at defining unit function, staff performance,and patient care activities.
  • Actively participates in JCAHO accreditation process.
  • Demonstrates excellence in job conduct, professional responsibility, dress, quality management activities, and education requirements.
  • Investigates and reports appropriately any problems relating to patient care or conditions which might harm the patient and/or visitors and staff.
  • Demonstrates responsibility in checking rooms, ordering supplies and equipment, etc. Assures that the rooms and unit are clean, well maintained, and well stocked.
  • Assures that equipment is functioning properly.
  • Assures that emergency equipment and supplies are available and in good order.
  • Evaluates equipment used in the department.
  • Works with Nurse Manager and unit staff to develop and implement long and short-term goals for the unit.
  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships with staff, and all members of the health team members.
  • Develops working relationships characterized by mutual support, open communication, trust, and respect.
  • Develops educational and practical experience objectives for self professional growth.
  • Recognizes self-deficit in knowledge, skills,or decision making and seeks validation/guidance from appropriate resources when indicated.
  • Initiates self-directed learning and participation in continuing education necessary to assure clinical competency.
  • Assures that documentation of own continuing education and self-development activities are current and validates by signing rosters and submitting copies of CE certificates for transcripts.
  • Shares knowledge gained in continuing education activities.

Minimum Requirements

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina.
  • Certification in specialty area recommended.
  • Maintain ACLS certification.
  • BLS Certified

Preferred Requirements

  • 6-12 mth. Charge Nurse Experience
