Information Services at Vidant Health

Vidant Health offers comprehensive Information Technology (IT) services and infrastructure to support and enable all aspects of organizational operations. Our IT division consists of a state-of-the-art data center located in Greenville, NC. The data center services all information technology needs of Vidant Health facilities. Vidant Health has been recognized as one of the 100 Most Wired healthcare organizations by Hospitals and Health Networks magazine. All Vidant Health owned or leased hospitals are on a common IT platform, including our electronic health record (EHR) that uses Epic's suite of applications. Vidant Health has achieved Meaningful Use Stage 2 recognition and is also approaching Stage 7 for HIMSS Analytics’ Electronic Medical Records Adoption Model (EMRAM) recognition.

Position Summary

The Application Architect/Portfolio Manager is responsible for overall architecture of the application systems, ensuring that it meets or exceeds business requirements and performance goals, and that the technical direction is consistent with the long-term direction while in accordance with regulatory policies and procedures. This is a key role in the strategic planning process for the organization, acting as a lead advisor to information systems department, business leaders and steering committees on how enterprise priorities link to technology, investment, and the risk and benefits of specific portfolio activities.

The Application Architect/Portfolio Manager position is also responsible for coordinating the development of application roadmaps and maintaining the portfolio view. The position participates in requirements collection, design, research and selection of appropriate platforms. The position proactively identifies opportunities for improving IT portfolio performance to provide a competitive advantage to the organization and achieve operational and financial goals. This position reports to the Vice President, IT Applications.


Strategic Planning

  • Participates with PMO and Business Relationship groups to consult business operating units on identifying the IT implications of key strategic and operating plans.
  • Establish relationships with key business functional stakeholders to build trust and maintain alignment of the technology strategy to commercial and operational functions.
  • Identifies and recommends opportunities to leverage existing systems and/or new and emerging technologies where appropriate.
  • Involved in the creation of business cases and RFP/RFI documentation for the purchase of solutions to meet business needs.

Architecture/Portfolio Management

  • Collaborates with IT and business application owners on the development of multiyear roadmaps and maintains a portfolio view for application systems that address Vidant business plans, vendor product developments and support requirements.
  • Works together with IT leadership to determine how the application is supported in production, including back-ups, disaster recovery, system performance, and project management.
  • Participates in the development and annual testing of Vidant Health's disaster recovery plan to ensure the plans are current and effective.
  • Ensure that systems adhere to Vidant standards and vendor contractual requirements to minimize business disruptions associated with incidents and/or unscheduled downtime.
  • Leads and documents the application architecture analysis and design to ensure that all the business, functional, security, integration, performance, quality, and operational requirements are met with a selected application.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer technology, information management or related field strongly desired.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in application development/design, infrastructure design/support, and data architecture principles, methods, techniques and technologies.
  • Proven background of designing and implementing architectural solutions which solve strategic and tactical business needs.
  • Strong experience participating in business planning and IT strategic exercises.
  • Seasoned professional with a deep understanding of health care operations as well as the current business issues and trends influencing health care providers preferred.
